On 3 May 2006, the Director of PAHO launched her BLOG as a contribution to the development of information technologies and the information society's knowledge sharing initiative, to get in touch with the people and health professionals throughout the region of the Americas. In the same year, in November, The ITU Plenipotentiary Conference which met in Antalya (Turkey) decided to henceforth celebrate 17 May as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. These events aim at highlighting the importance of world-wide access to information and promoting knowledge sharing in today World.
On 3 May 2006, the Director of the PAHO launched her BLOG under the slogan “PAHO, one Team, one Goal, Health in the Americas” as a contribution to the development of information technologies and the information society's knowledge sharing initiative, which open a regional dialogue on health, taking the opportunity of emerging technologies to promote access to health information, get in touch with the people and health professionals throughout the region of the Americas and globally. This initiative aims to network with partners and to reach health professionals throughout the hemisphere, to expand local and regional capacities and multiply the available social capital in the countries of the Americas
During the last 5 years the Blog of PAHO's Director has maintained a systematic and leadership role in the production and dissemination of relevant public health information for the Americas’ health authorities about the most pressing health issues for our region in the struggle to improve the quality of the health systems and services of the Member States of the Pan American Health Organization, and to reach higher levels of health for our people in the Americas. In this regard: Since 2006, more than 150 articles have been posted in the Blog of the Director, addressing more than 100 relevant health topics and public health issues in focus, sharing relevant information for health policies and decision-making among the PAHO Member States, Ministers of Health and regional and national health authorities. More than 20 health days have been celebrated and addressed with campaigns regionally, nationally and at local level (campaigns examples below) More than 40 media communication channels have been used The blog has registered visits from numerous international and regional organizations, experts in different health fields from the World Health Organization, the World Bank, UNESCO, the Center for Global Development at WDC, the Global Health Council, American Public Health Association APHA, the Carlos III Health Institute of Spain, Ministers of Health from the Americas, etc. Since the blog was launched on May 3, 2006 celebrating Internet Society Day readers from many countries around the world have visited and let their comments, most of them sharing the strategic point of view addressed at the articles. Last year in 2010 the PAHO Director BLOG was named as one of the top 50 International Health Care Blog by " The Practical Nurse Blog " for their important contribution to the global health problems, solutions and ideas. Today on the 1st PAHO Event celebrating Global Internet Day 2011 with a Social Media and Public Health Festival we want to recognize and celebrate the 5th anniversary of the director’s blog as an important tool for exchanging information and knowledge on health and development in the Americas, and extend an special recognition to the director blog’s team and office. The Pan American Health Organization recognize and celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the Director's BLOG, and extend and special recognition to: Dr. Mirta Roses, PAHO Director that took on the challenge, the responsibility and the commitment to lead one of the first blogs of the United Nations System, one of the first blogs leadered by an influential and prestiges regional leaders in public health, which has made it possible disseminate opinions, ideas, strategies and the PAHO mission among health authorities in our region and globally, and to share these ideas with all the population of the Americas at all levels. Director-BLOG's Administrator, Team and Office , for their sistematic work and outstanding contribution and support in the investigation, production, edition, publication and dissemination of the most pressing health issues for the Americas' region.
