Dear Ms. Elam,
Students at the University of Kentucky know that a degree alone won’t cut it anymore in the real
world.
With job markets becoming more competitive throughout the years, more students than ever are
exploring internship opportunities to gain professional work experience that isn't taught in a
classroom. In coordination with the UK Alumni Association, the James W. Stuckert Career
Center provides high-level career education programs and services to students and alumni. The
Career Center and Alumni Association are continuing to grow as nearly 4,000 alumni each year
take advantage of Alumni Career Services. Both undergraduate and graduate students have been
impacted by these services in a number of ways.
I have attached additional information outlining this rising initiative. Please contact me for
questions or further detail.
Regards,
Kasey Allgeier

Degrees Get Graduates Out the Door, But Not Quite Into the Next
Lexington, Ky. – December 17, 2014 – She hung up the phone in disbelief. Replaying the
conversation over and over in her head, she took a deep breath and knew she had to accept it. For
Tori Wolfe, the life she knew for 22 years was about to dramatically change as her career quickly
went south- in a good way.
The recent University of Kentucky graduate would soon call Miami, Fla. her new home
after accepting a permanent job offer from a familiar employer. Her two-year undergraduate
internship with one of the largest American-owned companies in the wine and spirits business,
Brown-Forman, did more than expose her to the real world. It made sure she would return.
“I never imagined myself landing a job with my college internship employer right after
graduation” said the university alumnus. “It’s true what they say about getting your foot in the
door. If it weren’t for my internship, I would probably still be job searching back home.”
At the University of Kentucky, students like Wolfe realize that a degree alone won't cut it
anymore when entering the workforce. With job markets becoming more competitive throughout
the years, students at UK are exploring internship opportunities to gain professional work
experience that isn't taught in a classroom.
“Employers nowadays are looking for internships and relevant experience,” said
Caroline Francis, UK alumni career counselor. “Statistically, the more working experience and
internships a student has, the better chance they have of landing a job after graduation. It has
-more-
3. definitely become a trend.”
Many colleges within the university have implemented changes to course curriculum to
reflect this trend by requiring students to work internship hours toward their degree. Students can
participate in academic internship opportunities for course credit on a semester basis. Academic
credit opportunities include Experiential Education for general elective credit, Departmental
Internships for department credit and Experiential Fieldwork for undergraduates doing full-time
internships for general elective credit.
Internship opportunities are even extending beyond Kentucky’s boarders to give students
a taste of international businesses operations through Education Abroad programs.
“Interning abroad was by far the best decision I made so far in my college career,” said
Kelsey Shannon, senior integrated strategic communications major. “It was cool to compare my
experience abroad to my previous internship in Lexington.”
Shannon earned an internship during her semester abroad in Seville, Spain through
International Studies Abroad, an education abroad program affiliated with UK. Previously, the
UK senior participated in an internship for academic course credit in the marketing and
advertising department of a local frozen yogurt establishment. Like most students with favorable
attitudes toward internships, Shannon said her internship experiences put her classroom-
conditioned skill set to the test.
Internships not only benefit students by reinforcing the skills they learn in classes, but
also allowing them to investigate the types of careers they think they might want to pursue. In
many cases, internships help students to learn that the job is not what they thought it would be
before entering their fields.

4. “I encourage students to take career assessments and get clarification on their values,
interests, personality types and skills,” said Francis of her career consolation expertise.
“However, most of this clarification will come from work experience and internships.”
Career assessments are one of the many unlimited services offered to students, employers
and alumni at the university's James W. Stuckert Career Center. Department leaders encourage
students to visit the Career Center to learn about and prepare for internship opportunities. The
Career Center provides high-level career education programs and services including individual
appointments, mock interviews, workshops and use of the career resource library.
Through the career resource library, students can explore hundreds of local, national and
international internship opportunities at their fingertips.
For graduates entering the workforce without internship experience, there are still
opportunities to catch up. The Career Center and the University of Kentucky Alumni Association
offer exclusive Alumni Career Services as a benefit to members. Career counseling is offered
weekly by appointment and includes career assessments, resume and cover letter critiques,
personal branding, job searching, company and industry research, and interview preparation.
"UK affords students so many opportunities while they are here on campus,” said Jillian
Smith, associate director for clubs and programs at UK. “We are one of the few schools with all
undergraduate and graduate students on the same campus which makes internships and career
experience possible on campus in many fields. Additionally, the hospital being right on campus
is great for students who plan to enter the medical field.”
Smith said the partnership between the Career Center and Alumni Association is strong
and continuing to grow as nearly 4,000 alumni each year take advantage of Alumni Career

The numerous resources available to students and alumni at UK can ensure that more
students are given the opportunity to gain valuable work experiences and more alumni are
benefitting from previous undergraduate work experiences. And hey, if their careers end up
heading south, it will likely be in a good way.

Five Quick Tips to Stand Out in a Stack of 500
Your Guide to an Effective Resume
Lexington, Ky. – December 17, 2014 – These days, it seems as if earning the degree is the easy
part. With job markets becoming more competitive than ever, it’s important to stand out in the
crowd and make a strong first impression. While a flashy smile or a firm handshake may be an
advantage come interview time, most employers base their first impressions solely on a piece of
paper. The University of Kentucky Career Center offers five quick tips for an effective resume to
stand out in the stack.
1. Beef it Up – So you’ve never had an internship, part-time job, or volunteer position.
Well, you have a degree, and you shouldn’t downplay it. Highlight courses relevant to the
job you’re seeking and include class projects that exemplify the skills necessary for the
job.
2. But, DON’T LIE! – Employers will be more impressed with a job candidate who is
honest about limited work experience and enthusiastic to earn some. Highlight your
personal skills and work ethic to convince the potential employer that you would be an
asset to the company.
3. Use Key Words – Be sure to use nouns and verbs to indicate your skills and experience,
such as customer service, research, problem solving, facilitate, etc.
4. Be Creative – Title sections with what makes sense for you. Experiment with different
resume templates, font sizes and styles, and organization methods. Pops of color can be
effective and unique. However, be sure to choose a legible font, an organized and well-
readable template, and avoid contrasting colors.
5. Include a Letter – Communication skills are critical to the success in any career and a
cover letter will be the first sample for an employee to evaluate your competence in this
area. Be sure your letters have no typos, grammatical errors and follow a standard
business format.
With these simple tips, you can get ahead when you feel left behind. Be sure to visit the Career
Center for free services such as resume critiques, cover letter reviews and mock interview
practices.
