Border countries: Austria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia,
Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine

3. Population: 9.000.000; Territory: 93.030 km²; Capital: Budapest

4. Hungarian language
Hungarian (= magyar) is a Uralic language, part of the Ugric
group, spoken by the Hungarians. The name "Uralic"
refers to the suggested original homeland of the Uralic
family, which is often located in the vicinity of the Ural
Mountains.

8. Polish Hungarian history
Święta Kinga also known as Kunigunda (Szent
Kinga) (1224 –1292)
She was the daughter of King Béla IV of
Hungary and Maria Laskarina. She was a niece
of St. Elizabeth of Hungary and great-niece of
Saint Hedwig. Kinga's sisters were Saint
Margaret of Hungary and Jolenta of Poland
(Yolanda, Helen).
Stefan Batory (Báthory István) (1533-1586)
He was a Hungarian noble Prince of
Transylvania (1571–1586), then King of Poland
(1576–1586).

9. In the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, a Polish
general, Józef Bem, became a national hero of
both Hungary and Poland. He was entrusted with
the defence of Transylvania at the end of 1848, and
in 1849, as General of the Székely troops.
World War II - Hitler’s invasion of Poland (1939)
Admiral Horthy's government, on the ground of
long-standing Polish-Hungarian friendship,
declined, Hitler's request to transit German
forces across Carpathian Rus into southeastern
Poland. The Hungarian refusal allowed the Polish
government and tens of thousands of military
personnel to escape into neighboring Hungary and
Romania, and from there to France and French-
mandated Syria.

15. Busójárás is a six-day
carnival in late
February to mark the
end of winter.
Carnival is known as Farsang.
Hungarians celebrate this pre-
Lenten festival with food, like
pork, and doughnuts, as well as
with parties and costumes.

18. Easter sprinkling on Easter Monday

19. Men visit women and ask for permission for sprinkling by reciting a little Easter
poem, they sprinkle them with some perfume or sometimes a bucket of cold
water in the countryside, and they get eggs (mostly of chocolate) in exchange.
Children get chocolate bunnies and eggs.

Originating in Hungary, the Racka has existed since at least the 1800,
when the first registry was established, used for milking, wool and meat.

24. Hungarian Steppe Cattle & Highwayman
Betyár (Polish: zbójnictwo), is much
determined for outlaw who has made in
Central Europe robbery (in cultural often
present positively). The most famous
Hungarian betyár was Rózsa Sándor.

Unesco World Heritage
Hortobágy national park is a part of the Alföld (Great Plain). It is Hungary's
largest protected area, and the largest natural grassland in Europe.

31. Rétes (stundel)
A rétes is a type of
layered pastry with a - most often
sweet - filling inside. Usually filled
with apple, sour cherry, poppy seeds,
Cottage cheese but can be filled with
cabbage or meat as well.
