Hello, as you all know, my name is Kari Savoie. Today, I will be giving my presentation on The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The Gates Foundation has three main programs to support people with many different needs all around the world. First, I will tell you about the agricultural development program. Then, I will talk about the program supporting clean water, sanitation, and hygiene and the final program specifically benefiting Global Health. The Foundation gives out $26,194,000,000 in total grants and $15,271,000,000 in support of Global Health.
The mission of the Foundation is to "increase opportunities for people in developing countries to overcome hunger and poverty."
William Henry Gates 111, or Bill Gates, was born on October 28th, 1955 in Seattle, Washington. At age 13, Gates started to show an interest in computer programming. Eventually, in 1975, he founded the computer program known as Microsoft. Because of this, Gates became one of the richest men in the world.
Melinda French was born on August 15th, 1964 in Dallas, Texas. In 1987 he began to work for Microsoft. She fell in love with Bill Gates and married him in 1994.
Here are some interesting facts. Did you know that 2.5 million people live on less than $1 a day? Also, 3/4 of 1.1 billion people living on less than $1 a day live in rural areas. Finally, one billion people live in chronic hunger because of lack of food. These are the kinds of people that The Gates Foundation supports in agricultural development.
Farmers in a third-world country face many challenges. First, because of the overuse of their soil, the nutrients from the soil disappears. Therefore, the crops either don't grow as well or at all. Also, the farmers lack the proper tools and technology to support the growth of the crops. Some of these tools are fertilizers or combine harvesters to speed the productivity of their farm. Sometimes, the crops a threatened by disease, pests, or drought. Finally, some farmers do not have access to markets to make profit off of their crops. The Gates Foundation's goal is to boost the productivity of these farms. In order to do this, they provide tools, they help the income of the farmer by transporting their crops to the market, they give the farmers technology to help with the growth of the crops, and finally, they gather data to better understand the challenges of the farmer.
The 2nd program of the Gates Foundation is about clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. Did you know that poor sanitation kills 1.6 million children annually? This program is directed to solving these issues in third-world countries. In some of these placed filled with poverty, people use the restroom out in the open or on what was clean drinking water. The Foundation tries to reduce the burden of diseases such as cholera by creating a system of sanitation. One way that they do this is by installing toilets so that the sewer doesn't contact the drinking water.
The Global Health program helps fight diseases such as diarrheal diseases, HIV/AIDS, malaria, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. In order to help prevent the spread of these illnesses, the Foundation makes advancements in technology and invests in research, vaccines, and drugs. The workers of this particular program work purely through grants. The three main programs of this portion of the Foundation are Discovery, Delivery, and Policy and Advocacy. In Discovery, workers conduct research on medical products. In Delivery, the workers address obstacles of people day to day lives that cause diseases. Finally, in Policy and Advocacy, the Foundation promotes the awareness of Public Health.
