Installing oracle 11g r2 client
1. Installing Oracle Tools

Intended Audience : Database Client Machines including (Desktops, Application Servers, Web Clients)
How To Download and Install
o Oracle provides its software for download on its website for Oracle Client it can be downloaded from the location in the
Link that follows eg(11gR2) Download Oracle Software Here
Prerequisite Steps
o Software Install Requires 1.6 GB of space and the downloaded zip is about 700 mb.
o Check Oracle Database Client Install PDF for server sizing
o Before uncompressing the downloaded zip file the following steps should be completed
Add a Group Standard used are - ( oinstall , dba )
command --> groupadd oinstall dba
o
Add a User Standard used is - oracle )
on Linux/Unix (To Create user )
useradd -G oinstall -d /home/oracle -s /bin/bash oracle
o
2. Install any Missing rpm packages or Patches for your platform. Please refer to Oracle documentation for applicable
patches at Oracle Database Client Install PDF
o After This Launch a Xterm session to your Linux / Unix system . For Windows this step is not required.
o Touch a file
touch /etc/oraInst.loc
chown oracle:oinstall /etc/oraInst.loc
vi /etc/oraInst.loc and insert the location of Inventory
inventory_loc=/opt/oracle/oraInventory
inst_group=oinstall
o As user Oracle -
Uncompress the Oracle Client software to the intended directory (eg.. /home/oracle)
Set environment Variables (eg Below) ** Also add this to the Oracle Users profile(eg -.bashrc)
ORACLE_BASE=/opt/oracle
Install the Software
o Make Sure you are logged in as User Oracle
o Change directory to the uncompressed Oracle Client Software eg (/home/oracle/oraclesoftware/client)
o Run the Installer in the directory using the Xterm – Please note if your $DISPLAY is not setup correctly the GUI will not
launch
$./runInstaller

4. 2. Select the Language which you would like to Install. Default is English (US). Sufficient for install in English only.
5. 3. You can setup the Oracle Base and Software Location . The value defaults to ORACLE_BASE environment variable
6. 4. The next screen does a prerequisite check which . For Client Only install below kernel values can be ignored. As they are
applicable for Database install.
Any other Failed checks such as packages(RPM's) should be fixed before proceeding.
7. 5. The Summary screen presents a confirmation page of your selection and what Oracle Installer will deploy for Oracle Client
8. 6. On selecting Finish on Step 5 will start the install process which will install the Oracle Client software in the chosen Oracle Directory After the install of
Oracle will popup a window to run root.sh which must be done as the root user (Open Another Window as Root and run the root.sh before clicking OK

9. 7. Once The root.sh script completes the Installer will move to the final screen where it will show the Successful Install stats.
10. You Can close the installer.
Configure TNS
You can configure using the GUI netca or add a tns entry manually to the network file located in
$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
The Database TNS file is called tnsnames.ora
vi tnsnames.ora (add lines below)
ORCL =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <HostName>)(PORT = 1521))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = ORCL)
)
)
This will complete your network setup and Install of the Client.
As Oracle User – Verify Connectivity to the database as ORCL use the command line utility (you must set your Oracle Home and
PATH )
export ORACLE_HOME=/opt/oracle/product/11.2.0/client_1
export PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH
tnsping ORCL
11. You should see output as below. The Last line should show "OK (<time> msec)
tnsping ORCL
TNS Ping Utility for Linux: Version 11.2.0.1.0 - Production on 28-AUG-2013 10:10:59

Used parameter files:
