Acknowledgement
Firstly, we would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to our Social
Psychology lecturer, Mr Shankar for his continuous guidance and constant encouragement
throughout the semester.
Through this project, we got the opportunity to explore and delve deep into psychological
concepts and theories that have greatly intrigued us in the past. While thinking about the
concepts and applying it into the storyline, it definitely pushed us to think more about the issue
and debate about the real reason as to why the things happened.
Last but not least, we would like to thank all of our group members for their cooperation
and hardworking attitude in order to complete this project. All group members managed to finish
their distributed part in time and being active during the discussion to complete the project.

Introduction
In this project, we are required to form in a group of five and conduct a social psychology
conceptual video clip. This project consisted of 3 components, which includes a 3 to 5 minutes
video clip by incorporating the concepts learned in class, a written report of the clip and a
presentation about the video in class.
After the first discussion, we came out of a story name “Don’t Be A Fernando”. This
story is about how Fernando, our main character, goes through his first year of degree in his
university life. The concepts found in this story are stereotype, first impression, confirmation
bias, social learning and ingratiation.
We hope that this story can bring awareness to the audience which reminds people not to
just butter up and flatters their superior but really work hard for everything they do.

Procedure
1. Confirming the concept
A meeting was conducted to discuss about the storyline and concepts of the video. We started
brainstorming and came up with a lot of different stories. Finally, we decided to choose the idea
proposed by Ly Vier. The story is about how Fernando goes through his first year degree life.
The concepts found in this story are stereotype, first impression, social learning, ingratiation and
confirmation bias.
2. Planning the video
After we confirmed the storyline and the concepts, we started to plan our video. Firstly, we
prepared a script for the video. Secondly, we distributed the roles among the members. Thirdly,
we chose the place to film our video and also the date and time for video shooting. Last but not
least, we discussed about the things needed to be in the film. After going through all the
preparations, we started to shoot our video.

3. Shooting the video
We gathered at a classroom and started the video shooting. We called our friends to help us with
the video shooting. We spent about 2 days to finish our video shooting.
4. Video clip, presentation slide and report
We divided our job equally among the member so that it could be done as soon as possible
before the submission date. Vincent will be editing the video. Kiraly and Fernando will be doing
the presentation slides. Lyvier and Kai Yun will be doing the report.

Discussion
Meeting 1
Date : 2-6-2015
Time : 2pm-3pm
Venue : Outside library
Each group member is required to come out with one story and the members will vote for the
best one. We decided to use Ly Vier’s story. Ly Vier and Kai Yun will create the script, speech,
location, time and more. A few days later, we started filming and gather all data and concepts
used for the video.
Meeting 2
Date : 4-6-2015
Time : 12pm-2pm
Venue : E8.02
We started our video shooting after Kai Yun’s short brief about the story.

Date : 7-6-2015
Time : 12pm-1pm

Plot
The story begins with Fernando starting his first year of degree at Taylor’s University.
Fernando saw a lot of newcomers when he went into the classroom. He then purposely
approaches the group of girls as he has the mind-set that girls are more capable and hardworking.
Fernando works hard to impress everyone. He approaches them and gave them the
chocolate sweets he bought just now. Due to his friendliness, they have a good impression on
him and think that he is a nice and friendly guy.
After the assignments were given down, Fernando did not do anything but just wandering
around. The results are given a few weeks later. Fernando got an “A+” unexpectedly. All of his
classmates highly doubt Fernando’s abilities and started to think that it is impossible for him to
get an “A+”.
The truth is, Fernando remembers that his siblings who once got good result by buttering
up the lecturers. Fernando was envious and started to put in effort on buttering up to his
lecturers. He often buys them drinks and food, he even volunteered to become the class
representative. This causes his lecturer to favour him. Therefore, he is known for his buttering up
skills and no one wanted help from him even he was being sincere as nobody trusts his intentions
anymore.

Scene 1
Time : 9:00 a.m.
Location : Taylor's entrance
Actors : Fernando
*Fernando walking towards Taylor's entrance and looks happy*
Narration: This is Fernando. He's currently 19. He's from Indonesia. The smirk on his face says it
all. He's really excited to meet his new classmates.
Scene 2
Time : 9.30 a.m.
Location : Classroom E8.03
Actors : All group members
*Fernando walks into the classroom, looking around*
*Somebody playing game, somebody sleeping, somebody looking for information*
*Fernando walks to a group of girls*
Fernando: Hi, can I sit here?
Lyvier: Yeah, sure!
*Fernando giving sweets to others*
[Lyvier: OMG sweets! I think he likes me!]
[Kaiyun: He's such a nice guy]
*Kiraly announces the assignments*
*Lyvier and Kaiyun discussing, Fernando looking around doing nothing and decides to buy some
drinks*
Fernando: Do you guys need some coffee? I think I'm getting some drinks.
Lyvier & Kaiyun: Oh yeah sure! Thank You!
*Fernando went out to buy coffee and came back*
Fernando: Here's your drinks.
*Fernando approaches others but was rejected*
*Fernando walks away alone sadly*

Actors : All group members
*Everyone got their own results and Fernando got A+*
*Lyvier took Fernando's paper away and was impressed by him*
Lyvier: Wow, you got an A+, I just got C-..
Kaiyun: I just got a D...
*Fernando looking happy and proud*
*Vincent telling others about Fernando's grades*
Vincent: Hey guys, I heard that Fernando got A+.
Classmate A: What?! He must be buttering up the lecturers!
Classmate B: Yeah! He doesn't deserve it at all!
Scene 4
Time : 12 p.m.
Location : Classroom E8.02
Actors : Fernando, Kiraly
*Kiraly walking towards the classroom*
*Fernando walk out from the classroom and saw Kiraly*
Fernando: Oh good morning sir! Can I help you with your books?
Kiraly: Good morning Fernando. Yeah sure.
*Both walks into the classroom*
Kiraly: Hey guys, I'm about to start the lecture soon.
Fernando: Sir! May I help you with your chair?
*Fernando pushes a chair towards Kiraly*
Kiraly: Hmm.. Guys, we need a representative for our class, any volunteer?
*Fernando looking surprise and quickly raise his hand*
Fernando: Me sir! Me! Me! Me! Can I volunteer myself?
Kiraly: So your class representative for this semester will be... Fernando!
*Kiraly pats on Fernando's shoulder*
* Fernando looking proud*

Concept
Stereotype
A type of schema in which we apply generalized information to an individual based on the group
to which he or she belongs.
In the video, Fernando experience stereotype as he categorize his classmates based on their
physical appearance. He thinks that girls are more capable than the boys.
First Impression
The event when one person first encounters another person and forms a mental image of that
person.
In the video, we can see that the group of girls judging Fernando by his first impression given to
them. They immediately think that Fernando is friendly and caring due to his action.
Confirmation Bias
A type of cognitive bias that involves favouring information that confirms previously existing
beliefs or biases.
In the video, confirmation bias is shown by the reaction and attitude of Fernando’s classmates.
They already set their mind set on Fernando who does not deserve an “A+” because he only
knows how to butter up others and he does not do any work at all.
SocialLearning
The social behaviour (any type of behaviour) is learned primarily by observing and imitating the
actions of others.
In the video, Fernando shows social learning where he imitates his siblings by buttering up their
superior.
Ingratiation
The psychological technique in which an individual attempts to become more attractive or
likeable to their target.
In the video, Fernando portrays ingratiation by flattering and buttering up his lecturers. He also
volunteered himself to be the class representative in order to set up a good image for his lecturer.

  • 3. 2 Acknowledgement Firstly, we would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to our Social Psychology lecturer, Mr Shankar for his continuous guidance and constant encouragement throughout the semester. Through this project, we got the opportunity to explore and delve deep into psychological concepts and theories that have greatly intrigued us in the past. While thinking about the concepts and applying it into the storyline, it definitely pushed us to think more about the issue and debate about the real reason as to why the things happened. Last but not least, we would like to thank all of our group members for their cooperation and hardworking attitude in order to complete this project. All group members managed to finish their distributed part in time and being active during the discussion to complete the project.
  • 4. 3 Introduction In this project, we are required to form in a group of five and conduct a social psychology conceptual video clip. This project consisted of 3 components, which includes a 3 to 5 minutes video clip by incorporating the concepts learned in class, a written report of the clip and a presentation about the video in class. After the first discussion, we came out of a story name “Don’t Be A Fernando”. This story is about how Fernando, our main character, goes through his first year of degree in his university life. The concepts found in this story are stereotype, first impression, confirmation bias, social learning and ingratiation. We hope that this story can bring awareness to the audience which reminds people not to just butter up and flatters their superior but really work hard for everything they do.

Confirming the concept A meeting was conducted to discuss about the storyline and concepts of the video. We started brainstorming and came up with a lot of different stories. Finally, we decided to choose the idea proposed by Ly Vier. The story is about how Fernando goes through his first year degree life. The concepts found in this story are stereotype, first impression, social learning, ingratiation and confirmation bias. 2. Planning the video After we confirmed the storyline and the concepts, we started to plan our video. Firstly, we prepared a script for the video. Secondly, we distributed the roles among the members. Thirdly, we chose the place to film our video and also the date and time for video shooting. Last but not least, we discussed about the things needed to be in the film. After going through all the preparations, we started to shoot our video.
  • 6. 5 3. Shooting the video We gathered at a classroom and started the video shooting. We called our friends to help us with the video shooting. We spent about 2 days to finish our video shooting. 4. Video clip, presentation slide and report We divided our job equally among the member so that it could be done as soon as possible before the submission date. Vincent will be editing the video. Kiraly and Fernando will be doing the presentation slides. Lyvier and Kai Yun will be doing the report.
  • 7. 6 Discussion Meeting 1 Date : 2-6-2015 Time : 2pm-3pm Venue : Outside library Each group member is required to come out with one story and the members will vote for the best one. We decided to use Ly Vier’s story. Ly Vier and Kai Yun will create the script, speech, location, time and more. A few days later, we started filming and gather all data and concepts used for the video. Meeting 2 Date : 4-6-2015 Time : 12pm-2pm Venue : E8.02 We started our video shooting after Kai Yun’s short brief about the story. Meeting 3 Date : 7-6-2015 Time : 12pm-1pm Venue : E8.03 The second video filming.
  • 8. 7 Plot The story begins with Fernando starting his first year of degree at Taylor’s University. Fernando saw a lot of newcomers when he went into the classroom. He then purposely approaches the group of girls as he has the mind-set that girls are more capable and hardworking. Fernando works hard to impress everyone. He approaches them and gave them the chocolate sweets he bought just now. Due to his friendliness, they have a good impression on him and think that he is a nice and friendly guy. After the assignments were given down, Fernando did not do anything but just wandering around. The results are given a few weeks later. Fernando got an “A+” unexpectedly. All of his classmates highly doubt Fernando’s abilities and started to think that it is impossible for him to get an “A+”. The truth is, Fernando remembers that his siblings who once got good result by buttering up the lecturers. Fernando was envious and started to put in effort on buttering up to his lecturers. He often buys them drinks and food, he even volunteered to become the class representative. This causes his lecturer to favour him. Therefore, he is known for his buttering up skills and no one wanted help from him even he was being sincere as nobody trusts his intentions anymore.
  • 9. 8 Script Scene 1 Time : 9:00 a.m. Location : Taylor's entrance Actors : Fernando *Fernando walking towards Taylor's entrance and looks happy* Narration: This is Fernando. He's currently 19. He's from Indonesia. The smirk on his face says it all. He's really excited to meet his new classmates. Scene 2 Time : 9.30 a.m. Location : Classroom E8.03 Actors : All group members *Fernando walks into the classroom, looking around* *Somebody playing game, somebody sleeping, somebody looking for information* *Fernando walks to a group of girls* Fernando: Hi, can I sit here? Lyvier: Yeah, sure! *Fernando giving sweets to others* [Lyvier: OMG sweets! I think he likes me!] [Kaiyun: He's such a nice guy] *Kiraly announces the assignments* *Lyvier and Kaiyun discussing, Fernando looking around doing nothing and decides to buy some drinks* Fernando: Do you guys need some coffee? I think I'm getting some drinks. Lyvier & Kaiyun: Oh yeah sure! Thank You! *Fernando went out to buy coffee and came back* Fernando: Here's your drinks. *Fernando approaches others but was rejected* *Fernando walks away alone sadly*
  • 10. 9 Scene 3 Time : 11:00 a.m. Location : Classroom E8.02 Actors : All group members *Everyone got their own results and Fernando got A+* *Lyvier took Fernando's paper away and was impressed by him* Lyvier: Wow, you got an A+, I just got C-.. Kaiyun: I just got a D... *Fernando looking happy and proud* *Vincent telling others about Fernando's grades* Vincent: Hey guys, I heard that Fernando got A+. Classmate A: What?! He must be buttering up the lecturers! Classmate B: Yeah! He doesn't deserve it at all! Scene 4 Time : 12 p.m. Location : Classroom E8.02 Actors : Fernando, Kiraly *Kiraly walking towards the classroom* *Fernando walk out from the classroom and saw Kiraly* Fernando: Oh good morning sir! Can I help you with your books? Kiraly: Good morning Fernando. Yeah sure. *Both walks into the classroom* Kiraly: Hey guys, I'm about to start the lecture soon. Fernando: Sir! May I help you with your chair? *Fernando pushes a chair towards Kiraly* Kiraly: Hmm.. Guys, we need a representative for our class, any volunteer? *Fernando looking surprise and quickly raise his hand* Fernando: Me sir! Me! Me! Me! Can I volunteer myself? Kiraly: So your class representative for this semester will be... Fernando! *Kiraly pats on Fernando's shoulder* * Fernando looking proud*
  • 11. 10 Concept Stereotype A type of schema in which we apply generalized information to an individual based on the group to which he or she belongs. In the video, Fernando experience stereotype as he categorize his classmates based on their physical appearance. He thinks that girls are more capable than the boys. First Impression The event when one person first encounters another person and forms a mental image of that person. In the video, we can see that the group of girls judging Fernando by his first impression given to them. They immediately think that Fernando is friendly and caring due to his action. Confirmation Bias A type of cognitive bias that involves favouring information that confirms previously existing beliefs or biases. In the video, confirmation bias is shown by the reaction and attitude of Fernando’s classmates. They already set their mind set on Fernando who does not deserve an “A+” because he only knows how to butter up others and he does not do any work at all. SocialLearning The social behaviour (any type of behaviour) is learned primarily by observing and imitating the actions of others. In the video, Fernando shows social learning where he imitates his siblings by buttering up their superior. Ingratiation The psychological technique in which an individual attempts to become more attractive or likeable to their target. In the video, Fernando portrays ingratiation by flattering and buttering up his lecturers. He also volunteered himself to be the class representative in order to set up a good image for his lecturer.
