1. Mythbusting: Can green tattoos be removed?
When it comes to removing tattoos, the colour of your tattoo can actually make all the difference.
Different laser wavelengths, and therefore different lasers are required to penetrate different
colours and remove your tattoo. It is common belief that green tattoos bring difficulties in laser
tattoo removal being a light resistant ink – we’re busting the myth and tell you where it’s at.
The difference between colours
As different colours require different wavelengths, most tattoo removals will require using different
lasers altogether or using different hand pieces on a Q switched laser. Opposite colours resolve each
other, so a green light will penetrate red and orange, while a red light will penetrate blue and green.
Green is said to be a light resistant tattoo ink and therefore impossible to remove! But there actually
is a laser that can, and it’s called a Ruby laser. There even are lasers that use a near-infrared light
which is invisible to humans at a very high wavelength of 1064 nm, and this is the only laser that is
actually suitable for darker skin! You see it can get complicated, so be sure to get a professional
consultation to find the right treatment for your skin and tattoo.
The Ruby laser
As red light penetrates green ink the best, the ruby laser does just that and sends it out in a 694nm
wavelength (nm = nanometres). This wavelength perfectly penetrates green ink and makes the Ruby
laser the most effective laser to remove green, blue and other dark tattoos. So it is indeed possible
to completely remove even green ink using a combination of Q switched and Ruby lasers.
Our tattoo removal clinic is currently the only one in Australia using a device that has both machines
within one unit, offering the best possible treatment to remove your tattoo without leaving a trace.
