Respiration System
1. 8th Grade Life Science
By: Kristen Smith
Lesson Plan:
40 minutes
One Class
Standards:
Performance Indicator 1.2
1.2a Each system is composed of organs and tissues which perform
specific functions and interact with each other, e.g., digestion, gas exchange,
excretion, circulation, locomotion, control, coordination, reproduction, and
protection from disease.
1.2b Tissues, organs, and organ systems help to provide all cells with
nutrients, oxygen, and waste removal.
1.2c The respiratory system consists of organs that are responsible for the
exchange of materials involving oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Objective: Students will be able to:
- locate essential organs in the human body
- arrange placement of organs in the human body
- define essential organs. Ex: trachea, lung, diaphragm
Method/Teaching Strategy:
The teacher will present a PowerPoint on the respiratory system. It will go over all
the essential organs and discuss the properties of structure and function. Students
will take outlined notes that will follow along with the PowerPoint.
Materials:
- PowerPoint projector
- outlined notes
2. 8th Grade Life Science
Did you know?
Hiccups are the sudden movements of the diaphragm. It is involuntary --- you have no
control over hiccups, as you well know. There are many causes of hiccups. The
diaphragm may get irritated, you may have eaten to fast, or maybe some substance in
the blood could even have brought on the hiccups.
Procedure:
The teacher will begin the unit on the respiratory system. Students will receive
outlined notes, and they will fill in note sheets while listening to a PowerPoint
presentation on the respiratory system. (30 minutes)
B. Respiration and Breathing
RESPIRATION
1. ________________________ - oxygen
and glucose undergo a series of chemical
reactions inside cells. These chemical
reactions release energy and produce
carbon dioxide.
BREATHING
2. ______________________ - movement
of air into and out of lungs
- Student will be encouraged to
ask questions and have open
discussions about the
structure and function about
various respiratory organs.
- Teacher will show brief video
clips along with PowerPoint to
highlight core concepts.
- With remaining class time,
use an online fetal pig model
to show students the key
organs. Fetal Pig Dissection
- If time permits show students
3-D approach using in class
anatomy model (SHIM).
3. 8th Grade Life Science
Assessment:
Assessment will be taken via ”teacher watching” and see how students react to
questions posed as well as questions asked. Worksheets will be given later in the
unit as well as a unit it. Assessment can also be taken depending on student
participation in the “amnesia” game which will occur as a review later on.
Rationale:
The respiratory system is a key component when studying the human body in 8th
grade Life Science. Students need to know how essential organs are able to act in
terms on gas exchange to carry out specific life functions and maintain the
organism’s homeostasis.
