39. Data Collection. The focus on my study is to investigate how twitter is being used by students and staff at the University of Canberra? To identify users, “uni Canberra”, “University of Canberra” were searched using twitter’s search function. Users who mentioned University of Canberra in some way were followed. Business and people with private locked tweets were excluded from the selected users. So far 30 users have been identified. The public posts made through twitter over the two month period from the 20th of August to the 20th of October 2010 were collected.

40. Sub-questions. The first sub-question relies on Huberman, Romero, and Wu’s Social networks that matter: Twitter under the microscope. Using their research as guide, the twitter messages are analysed to determine the underlying social network hidden beneath the declared friends and followers. My interest is finding out how many people use twitter to communicate directly with another person.

41. Sub-questions. The second sub-question, is how frequently do users link to other content not on twitter? With the vast amounts of information available on the internet the search engines and other devices used for filtering information have become more important. Twitter due to its limited character posts often links users to other sites. My interest is discovering how frequently this occurs, as well as the main types of information linked, ie photograph, video, newspaper article.

42. Sub-questions. The third and final sub-question that arises is what exactly are the selected users talking about on twitter? What information is commonly shared on twitter? Categorising posts as comments about either news and current affairs, university news, other online information, or other personal comments. My aim is to discover the main use of twitter by the selected users, as well as analyse how often posts about university work is created by the selected users.

43. Why do you want to know more about this research? This report will outline the key implication to using twitter in an educational setting. Twitter has the potential, when used to supplement traditional forms of teaching, to enhance the learning experience, allows quick interaction with teachers, academics, and fellow students, reinforcing social ties, and promoting the dispersal of ideas, and criticisms of those ideas. By analysing how twitter is used currently, this report hope to help inform educational institutions into how twitter can be used in the future.
