1. Evaluation Q5: How did you attract/address your audience?
ï¶ Target audienceis young adults 15-18 year olds, mainly boys from the
violent story line. The reason behind this is that I feel that the story line
would be too maturefor anyoneunder the age of 15 year olds, this is
because it could be distressing for them, and the actorsall fit in this age
categoryso the audience will be able to emphasise with them morethan
if they were of a differentage group.
ï¶ The title of our film is dream paralysis and the fontwith the blur around
highlights the main story line of the dream and there weird hallucinations
which come with the illness of sleep paralysis. We thoughtthat this title is
uniqueand not something which people have heard before, the effect
this will have is attractmore people to watch it and will appeal to our
target audience.
ï¶ The sound we used attracted the audience from the pointof view it is
juxtaposition between the music and what is actually happing, for
example in the cellar scene we used a subtle piano in the background to
build tension in a differentway to most other thriller movies. We also
edited the music to make it clear the differencewhen she fell asleep and
entered the dream
ï¶ Our charactersareconventionalto a thriller, as they have a protagonist
and an antagonistwhich is one of the key conventions of a thriller movie.
I think that our characterswill clearly be able to attractour chosen
audience, this is because they will be of the same age range, and the
effect in which this will have is it will help the audience to feel sympathy
for the actors in the scene. I also think that the character of the
kidnapper with attract our targetaudience of a working class, young
male. I think this because they will like the fact that the male is more
dominantand mysterious which may make them want to watch the rest
of the film after watching the opening sequence.
ï¶ The two main themes of our thriller firstly was a kidnapping, this is a
conventionalthriller movie film theme this is featured in a lot of other
thrillers of all differentsub-genres. Theother theme we used was dreams
vs reality, I donâtthink this is a normalconventional thriller move theme
but I think the audience will be attracted to this because it is differentto
most other psychologicalthriller so is unique and also could interest the
audience which like a bit of mystery.
2. ï¶ For the editing we used a wide rangeof differenttechniques to make it
moreinteresting for the audience, We made the transition between
reality and dream really shaky to showthe differencebetween what parts
were dream and which bits were real life. We used fast quick short
scenes to show partsbut not all of the kidnapping which leaves bits for
the audience to figureout. We used a split screen during the kidnaping
and cellar scene to relate to the distorted dream she was having. We also
used a filter on all the cellar scene to create a darkand eerier
atmosphere, this is a normalconvention of a thriller genre film, to
develop the dark mysterious feel to it. The effect in which this will have is
make the audiencefeel moresuspension and tension throughoutand
enjoy it morefor the thriller it is.
ï¶ I think for our mise-en-scene we considered all the conventional props
and lighting to convey the psychologicalthriller clearly, the use of the
phonereally related to the age of the actor and the main target audience
as they live in a world with technology and mobile phones all around
them. The costumes make it moremysterious because the school
uniform showsthe vulnerability and the target audience of 15-18 year
olds would be attracted because they could relate completely and they
are the same age as the actorswhich means they are more relatableto
that age range.
ï¶ Overall I think we were really successful in attracting our targetaudience
as they all found it gripping and all said it had a good plot, we followed a
lot of the key conventions of thriller movies other films which relate to
our plot are films such as gonegirl which has a hugeinterest and target
audience so I think our opening sequence and film will have as well.
