  • 226. Notable Open Enterprise Server Customers
  • 227. California Highway Patrol Americas “ The performance of Novell Open Enterprise Server running on Linux has been great and the fact that it ships with Xen for virtualization was a big plus,” said McLeod. “ Had we gone with VMware, it would have cost us an additional $800,000. ” “ Since migrating to Novell Open Enterprise Server and leveraging Xen for virtualization, we’ve been able to consolidate one third of the servers in our data center, “said McLeod. “We can now create a new virtual server on the fly, and have it up and running in less than a day.” Bruce McLeod, Network Architect California Highway Patrol
  • 228. Hartford Hospital Americas “ We wanted to move to Linux and Novell Open Enterprise Server to gives us the networking functionality we are accustomed to with NetWare on a Linux platform. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server gives us enormous flexibility with the ability to leverage open source applications, as well as build our own.". "When we can't hire more staff or invest in more hardware, we have to make do with what we have. Novell solutions allow us to actually do more with less. Novell has saved us a lot of money and our investment continues to pay off ." Fernando Seguro, Manager of Systems Engineering Hartford Hospital CONSOLIDATION ON LINUX story... customer used SLES for multiple apps.
  • 229. Leicester City Council EMEA “ Novell Open Enterprise Server running on Linux gave us continuity with our previous ways of working , combined with new options for the future.” “ The support and service from Novell across the various new solutions has been excellent,” said Volante. “We have already seen significant benefits in terms of reduced administration and increased productivity, and we look forward to extending our set of solutions to include Novell Identity Manager and Novell Teaming + Conferencing.” Kamal Kotecha, Server Manager Leicester City Council
  • 230. Ohio Courts of Claims Americas ““ We live and die by Novell storage solutions. The Dynamic Storage Technology component of Novell Open Enterprise Server enabled us to easily move more than a terabyte of less frequently accessed data to inexpensive hardware, reducing our hardware costs alone by 60 percent .” “ All the storage management solutions we looked at were either really complicated or very expensive,” said Glenn. “Some would have required that we move to a Microsoft file server, and that’s where the conversation ended. I didn’t want to cut our performance in half!” “ With most storage management systems, you often experience incompatibilities in the file system. Dynamic Storage Technology from Novell is such an elegant solution . You don’t even have to make allowances for software incompatibilities.” Michael Glenn, Sr. IT Manager Ohio Courts of Claims DYNAMIC STORAGE TECHNOLOGY reference.
  • 231. Almabani Engineering Contractors EMEA "Where we have to operate using the satellite link, data transfer is much slower, and this would cause synchronisation problems for most e-mail servers," said John Lincoln, IT Director at Almabani. "We needed a solution that could reliably provide access to e-mail, calendaring, tasks and files from any of our locations John Lincoln, IT Director Almabani Engineering Contractors
  • 232. State of Louisiana HHS Americas "We are familiar with Novell's tradition of producing quality products and have had years of great experience with Novell Services. Andrew Muller, IT Manager Aquelle This is a new customer to Novell who chose our enterprise-class products when their home-grown Linux solution maxed out. NOT A NETWARE UPGRADE.
  • 234. itecPLUS EMEA "File systems and network services may not seem very important compared with the mission-critical data held in our enterprise SAP systems. However, when you consider that our customers' e-mail systems and other front-end applications cannot function without such services, it would clearly be disastrous to lose them . The Novell Business Continuity Clustering solution enables us to provide the same high levels of availability for our Intel-based systems as for our enterprise systems." Werner Moschner Team Leader, IT Operations itecPLUS OES/Clustering/Business Continuity Clustering
  • 235. iTV.com EMEA Novell Open Enterprise Server running on SUSE Linux allows ITV to further consolidate file, print and mail servers to simplify IT management, while significantly reducing hardware and software costs. A standardized environment has also simplified IT training, allowing ITV to focus primarily on Linux, rather than splitting its training across multiple platforms. "Without a Novell Linux solution, we would have had some difficult decisions to make. We would have had to choose an alternate platform that would not have offered the same level of scalability across our enterprise, or the same degree of performance and cost savings ." Nick Leake, Director,Operations & Infrastructure iTV.com OES/Clustering/Business Continuity Clustering
  • 236. Social Security Appeals Tribunal APAC “ The Novell solutions helped us gain more control over our documentation and empower our members to share and re-use information across the agency. We saw demonstrations of what a Linux environment could do for us and knew that Novell Open Enterprise Server was the best fit.” “ We were really struggling to keep up with user demand – we were simply running out of circuits and space in our data center. By leveraging Xen virtualization, we can easily add new servers and meet the demands of our users without having to purchase additional hardware .” “ User dissatisfaction was reaching a breaking point before implementing our Novell solutions. We now have a high-performing environment with zero downtime and are able to keep up with the demands of our users, despite minimal resources and limited budget.” John Jubic, End User Solutions Mgr. Colorado Dept. of Corrections
  • 238. Texas Attorney General Americas “ Our small, centralized IT team can manage a complex network across the entire state. We have experienced almost no downtime since we installed the new solution, and we can now take full advantage of our new hardware without worrying about stability issues.” “ Novell Open Enterprise Server is extremely easy to manage and upgrade . You can choose to install only the elements that you need, which makes it rapid to deploy, and the general operating system management tools are very well designed. The solution definitely saves time for our IT staff because it is so simple to use. ” Kou Chunliang, IT Administrator Central China Securities
  • 241. Dalmia Magnesite Cement APAC "We wanted to upgrade, but we did not want to make major changes to our existing infrastructure. Many of the proposed solutions involved moving to a three-tier architecture with numerous application and database servers. Some would also have required our custom applications to be rewritten. These were both expensive options, so we wanted to find a different solution." "We have worked with Novell software for many years, and we are confident in the reliability and performance. When we decided to move to Linux, Novell was the best option for us—particularly because SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Novell Open Enterprise Server made it easy to migrate without the need for significant redevelopment effort ." "We have had trouble with viruses on Windows-based operating system servers in the past, and we were keen to avoid the same problems in future. So far, our confidence in the Novell operating systems has been completely rewarded." P Saravanan, Systems Manager Dalmia Magnesite Corp. CONSOLIDATION ON LINUX story... customer used SLES for multiple apps.
  • 242. ELBAS EMEA "Novell deserves credit for making it easy to upgrade from NetWare to Novell Open Enterprise Server on Linux – there was no risk to the business and the whole migration went very smoothly.” “ VMware enables us to run all seven Novell Open Enterprise Server environments on just two physical servers – cutting hardware costs, saving space and reducing electricity requirements significantly.” “ VMware virtualisation enables us to run all seven Novell Open Enterprise Server environments on just two physical servers – cutting hardware costs by around 70 percent, saving space and reducing electricity requirements significantly,” said Olsen. “Even more important, we now have the capacity to expand our IT environment to match business growth. There is plenty of headroom in the new servers, and we know that SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is a highly scalable operating system, so there should be no problems in dealing with increasing demand.” Henning Olsen, IT Administrator ELBAS GmbH CONSOLIDATION ON LINUX with VMWare.

Editor's Notes

  1. Open Enterprise Server is a bundle of high-value networking, storage and print services that are optimized to run on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. You can see that we still are shipping a NetWare bare-metal install option, but not all of the most valuable services are available on that kernel. Domain Services for Windows, Dynamic Storage Technology, Virtualization, and the easy upgrade tools can only be used when deploying on SUSE Linux Enterprise. However all the critical tools you are familiar with, and have relied on for years with NetWare, are now available for you to use on Linux. And with the same skill sets you already have in your environment.

  8. If you are still using NetWare, only Novell provides you with a viable and cost-effective upgrade path, which allows you to leverage current investments and skills. Open Enterprise Server on Linux provides all the services you have relied on, all enhanced on the Linux platform. But why should you be so excited about that? SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is the most interoperable platform for mission-critical computing—both physical and virtual. As you embrace this platform for your workgroup collaboration services, you're investing in opportunities for further cost-savings and optimizations in your environment. * Leverage the ecosystem of ISVs/IHVs supporting SUSE Linux Enterprise (this didn't exist for NetWare) * You can consolidate any workload on SLES – even Windows workloads. * Leverage Novell's workload management capabilities In addition, you have actually started to implement the Novell Open Collaboration Architecture. You are building the back-end for your future collaboration needs. Equally important, we have also made migration tools, best practices and upgrade guides available, to facilitate your move to Linux.
