2. I have already completed trailer research into
Danny Boyle’s film 28 Days Later and this has
allowed me to see some of the conventions
used in the horror genre.
However, I believe it would be good to analyse
another trailer from a different medium. The
second trailer I will analyse is Channel 4’s 2008
Dead Set trailer. Dead Set is a TV horror, drama
series. The main location is the notorious Big
Brother house which becomes a shelter from
the dead.

Once again I used video streaming/sharing
website www.youtube.com to find the full
length trailer although I had previously seen it
on television.
4. Editing
Rapid, quick cuts used at the end of the
trailer to heighten tension and condense
action into smaller clips.
Speed of editing; begins slowly but
towards the tail of the trailer, the speed
increases as the zombies are revealed.
Red blood effect on intertitling
synchronizes with horror genre in addition
with a distorting transition.
5. Camerawork
Strong variation of shot selection; shaky cam used for
a close up with a zombie, shaky medium shot used as
zombie runs down corridor.
Long shot used down corridor as a small horde of
zombies chase.
Tracking shot used to keep chase with running
zombie. Similar to a p.o.v shot.
Long shot shows zombies against gate attempting to
breakthrough. The gate acts as a barrier between the
safety and death. The shot also highlights the difficulty
the survivors face; the odds are severely against
them.
6. Mise en scene
News report on screen details riots; sense of
realism and reality about outbreak.
Shaky cam close up of zombie/infected
head reveals danger to audience.
Dramatic irony as audience do not realize
that outbreak is taking place.
Popular celebrity (Davina McCall) features
as a zombie ensuring a greater connection
with the viewing public as she is a popular
public figure.
