“At the last dim horizon, we search among ghostly errors of
observations for landmarks that are scarcely more
substantial. The search will continue. The urge is older than
history. It is not satisfied and will not be oppressed.

and Personal Life
• He was Caucasian
• Edwin Powell was born in Marshfield, Missouri. His
family moved to Chicago where he attended high school at
Illinois State high.
• Hubble was fascinated by both science and new and
mysterious worlds and spent most of his childhood reading
books of Jules Verne (20,000 leagues under the sea) and
Henry Rider Haggard (King Solomon's Mines).
• In 1913 Hubble set up to be a lawyer in Louisville
Kentucky but it didn’t take long for Hubble to figure he
wasn’t happy with his profession. He eventually started
to study at the Yerkes Observatory to take on his passion
of astronomy.
• In 1917 Hubble received a doctorate in astronomy from
the University of Chicago. After a tour duty in world war
1, Hubble took worked at the Mount Wilson Observatory

3. Discoveries and Contributions
• Devised a classification system for the various galaxies he observed,
sorting them by content, distance, shape, and brightness.
• He noticed red shifts in the emission of light from the galaxies, seeing that
they were moving away from each other at a rate constant to the distance
between them.
• From this, he was able to formulate Hubble’s Law in 1929, which helped
astronomers determine the age of the universe and that the universe was
expanding
• We were also able to determine that if the universe was expanding
outwards, it must have been coming from a central point, and that must
have caused the expansion to begin with, giving us the Big Bang Theory.

• Went to Illinois State high
• Also went to Oxford University
• Fought in World War 1
• Worked in Mount Wilson Observatory in California
• Left Mount Wilson 1942 to fight in World War 2 but thought his
contribution to science was more helpful to his country .
• After the war he return to Mount Wilson
• Convinced his employers to create a better telescope then the current one.
• It was design to further explore the galaxy
• He continued to work at Mount Wilson and Mount Palomar until his
death with cerebral thrombosis

•Elected Honorary Fellow of Queen’s
College for his notable contribution to
astronomy
