2. In what way does your media
project use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
3. I feel that my music video follows the
conventions of many other music videos in the
industry, this is because I researched videos of
a similar style and genre, and implemented
that style into my video, as well as adding
some of my own personal ideas. In a way, the
video can also challenge conventions, as not
many of the music videos in the indie genre
are entirely live action, but I made sure that
the video remained interesting all of the way
through to entice the viewer.
4. How effective is the combination
of your main product and ancillary
texts?
5. Having an effective Digi-pak is the key to having
consumers easily recognise each product that is
made. My poster and my album cover are very
similar, being shot at the same location, in a very
similar fashion. I also chose to include the album
cover on the poster, which created a strong
visual link and were easily recognisable
photographs and styles of poster/album cover.
When I shot my video, it looks like it does not fit
in with my Digi-pak, however, purposely I made
sure that only the intro to the video looked the
same, this was to make the video instantly
recognisable, e.g the clothes were the same, and
I also use black and white such as on my poster
and album cover.
6. I believe that my Digi-pak relates to the indie-
punk genre, as it tends to be gritty, so a
distorted black and white effect was used to
accomplish this. Also the clothing worn is
respective of the genre and also appeals to
the target audience. When analysing album
covers from similar bands, I found that they
were often minimalistic and sometimes did
not even feature an album name. Black and
white also seemed very desirable within the
genre.
8. If I did not receive feedback from my target
audience on my products, then I would be
unsure on how the majority would accept my
work. I had some issues with lighting and
synchronisation that were pointed out in the
feedback, which I was then able to change for
my final cut. It was also noticed that my shots
were seemingly short and also looked a little
‘clean cut’ for the style of music, so I added
more effects and used more handheld
shooting which gave the raw effect that the
video needed.
9. By gaining audience feedback, it also showed
that I had reached the correct target
audience, which was primarily people of my
age who were into a specific style of music.
They believed that the video reflected the
song well and was exciting and captivating.
10. How did you use media
technologies in the construction
and research, planning and
evaluation stages?
11. During my research phase of the product, I
mainly used the internet to gather information
about bands and the styles of video for the
genre. I then moved on to video streaming
websites such as YouTube in order to analyse
different music videos. I then had to visit
bands’ websites in order to retrieve album art
to analyse. I was also interested in music video
directors so I used websites such as Wikipedia
to look up their information.
12. During the designing of my products I used a
few different programs. When constructing
my poster and album cover, I used
Macromedia Fireworks, as it was a program
that I had used before and I was confident
using. I used a video camera to record my
music video, I then tried 2 different programs
to edit my footage. I used Sony Vegas and
Pinnacle 12, I found Pinnacle to be more user-
friendly and also featured the effects that I
was more interested in using, as well as
transitions and other similar features.
