3. Steps Involved In Producing an Attractive Art Piece.
The difficulties of producing an attractive art piece have been faced by many
artist throughout the centuries of mankind. Especially when it comes down to
painting. Examples such as difficulties on where to start painting, dissatisfaction of
current progress of painting and so on and so forth. As mentioned by Timothy
Brearton, “As we age, perhaps we refine ourselves, hone our craft, narrow our
options” (T.Brearton, Painter, 2014). However, with time comes wisdom. Many artist
have shared their experiences and thought regarding this dilemma. Therefore,
several steps have been drawn up to help you produce an attractive art piece such
as finding inspiration, preparation and producing your art piece.
Firstly, finding something that inspires you is essential when creating your
painting. Inspiration can be found just about anywhere, at any time and it could be
anything. Take for instance when you are strolling by a scenic view or when you spot
something intriguing or captivating, you are taken by your emotions driven by a
hormone in our body called oestrogen to want to create something. Inspiration does
not only come by through sight-seeing and observing alone, but also through mass
media. Browsing through the latest social media applications such as Instagram,
Pinterest and Tumblr may spark motivation and inspiration as many art pieces from
other artist can be found there. In addition to that, listening to your favourite genre of
music also stirs up inspiration. Personally, soft rock has always worked for me when
I pick up the pencil or paint brush so, try listening to your favourite tunes when you
feel like creating a masterpiece. Nina Riechmann says “Music always inspires me in
every situation of my life. Either if I’m listening to a song and think “this could be a
picture” or the other way around, music is my teacher, my friend and also my healer.”
(N.Riechmann, The Photographer, 2014)
Secondly, before beginning to work on something it is always better to be
prepared before rushing into things. Plan the construct, materials needed and steps
of your painting before beginning to paint on your canvas. Many times artists have
thrown away their work half way through as they realize that their work does not look
like the way they expected it to be. Not only does this waste money and materials
but time and effort as well. With a plan in your hand, necessary painting materials
only then should be bought instead of wasting your money on buying unnecessary
items that you do not use in the end. And when I mean necessary painting material,
it means that if your idea is to produce an acrylic painting, buy acrylic paints, not
watercolour pencils. The most common materials used depending on your painting
concept are palettes, painting knives, stretched canvas, canvas stand, paint brushes,
drop cloth, paints, manikins and more. The environment that you work in is as
equally important. You need to choose a suitable work space to create your painting.
Preferably would be in an open area, or an empty medium sized enclosed area and
if required with the object of your painting in front of you. The environment you
choose should allow the painter to express his/her emotions freely and not
somewhere constricting like in a bathroom cubicle.
Finally, getting started on the production of your art piece. When painting, it
can be very abstract or more literal, a balance of both expressive nature and logic
must be present. Use art book references to brush up on the proper techniques of
using your paint materials. For example, in acrylic painting, is to cover the white
canvas with one solid paint colour which is called a ‘toned ground’. This technique
guarantees a mood setting background. Mentioned by Will Kemp, “Different artists
throughout the ages have used toned grounds in their work, from Turner to Jack
Vettriano” (W.Kemp, award-winning professional artist and teacher, 2014). Moving on,
use your drawing and painting materials carefully. For example, use a light shaded
pencil, type H, to outline your painting before actually painting it to avoid mistakes in
your painting. Also, while you’re painting, always step back from the canvas to gain a
better perspective of your progress. Step back and using your thumb as a scale to
measure proportions. This method has been used by artist all over the world.
As my conclusion, you will find it at your convenience with these steps by
finding your inspiration, preparing for your art work and producing your painting.
Never again will you face an artists’ block, if you follow these few steps. But always
remember to be patient with yourself and your painting, then you will be on your way
to produce an attractive art piece.
