2.  For the last four decades, John Cutchin has

Drivers can be assigned penalties for traffic
tickets at a variety of levels throughout the
United States. North Carolina, like most states,
makes use of a point system overseen by the
Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

3.  For each offense committed by a driver, one
or more points are charged to the individual's
driving record, based on the severity and
nature of the offense. A littering offense while
driving, for instance, carries a single-point
penalty in the state of North Carolina. Lesser
offenses, such as improper registration or an
illegal parking maneuver, may result in no
points at all.

4.  On the other end of the spectrum, passing a
stopped school bus will rack up eight penalty
points against a person's driving record. The
offense is considered especially heinous in
North Carolina, edging out a number of other
serious offenses like reckless and aggressive
driving by a number of points. Additional
offenses and their penalties include driving
without a license (a four-point infraction) and
driving on the wrong side of the road (an
offense valued at five points).
