I used to be so negative about selling and that is probably why I wasn't any good at it. Until I discovered the power of persuasion and the way to "soft-sell". Now I know this is probably not new to many of you but you may like my story of how as a tour guide in Mexico I got a different perception on marketing.

3. Introduction
The mayan civilization dominated the southeastern part of mexico and
parts of central america between roughly 1500 BC through 1200 AD.
Growing corn, beans and squash and without any significant
technology they were able to rise above mediocracy. In the classical
period between 300 and 900 ad priest-kings ruled over vast city-states
with tens of thousands of people. Construction was at an all-time rise.
Temples, palaces, and sacred roads arose everywhere in the area.
merchants traveled between cities with salt, honey from the yucatan
peninsula, dyes, salted fish, deerskin, and a variety of other products.
Jade was the most precious stone of all, since the green color was
seen as related to the centre of the universe, where the sacred ceiba
or tree of life connected the underworld with the upperworld.
All existence was kept in place by the gods. Cha'ac, the rain god would
cover the fields with nourishing rain, providing substenance and
prosperity.
Every afternoon at nightfall, k'in, the Sun-god, would travel into the
underworld as a jaguar, to be reborn the next day. Cosmic order and
stability was guaranteed by the kings who would offer to the gods
sacrifice, their own precious blood by bloodletting rituals, animal
sacrifice and sometimes even human sacrifice.
And while the maya had little to none technology, their intellectual
advances were remarkable. They developed a complete writing system
that rivals that of the ancient Egyptians.
They used a seashell to represent the zero, a concept unknown even
to the Romans, and they developed an astounding calendar that even
today is more precise than ours.
4. The Mayan Calendar
Since the human body has ten fingers and ten toes, they based their
counting system on the number twenty, so it's not decimal like our
system.
Likewise, each month counted twenty days. so they divided the solar
year over 18 months times twenty days, 360 in total.
They called this unit "tun" ("tun" also means "stone"). Then at the end
of the cycle they had five empty days, days of ritual and bloodletting.
A child that was born during those 5 days was likely to be sacrificed,
since they had no protection from the gods!
So 18 times 20 plus 5 empty days equals 365 days, a solar year.
Have you ever noticed you have 2 wrists, ellbows, shoulders, hips,
knees, ankles and one neck?
5. The Maya combined those thirteen main articulations of the human
body with the number twenty resulting in 260-day cycle.
This system is called zolkin and is of more spiritual nature.
Furthermore, midwives in guatemala still count 260 days from a
womans' last period.
So we have these two cycles.
You would imagine these as two dented wheels. And since one wheel
is larger than the other, the combination between the two can only
occur once every fifty-two years.
That is why the mayan "century" was 52 years and not 100.
Are you with me so far?
Remember a tun is a 360-day cycle? The empty days are discarded,
they were counted but not written.
Next, tun times twenty makes a katun of 7,200 days (about 20 years
which is a generation), and katun times twenty makes a baktun of
144,000 days (about 400 years).
Now pay attention here.
Because the secondary counting factor is thirteen, one full calendar
round consist of thirteenn baktunes. So thirteen times 144,000 days.
that about equals 5,125 years, making one full Calendar Round.
Of course the big question is...since when?? To be able to accurately
pinpoint what day they were referring to at any given point in time, we
need a point of reference.
Well, according to the experts the Maya started counting from a
mythical date of Creation, the 13th of august 3114 BC, in our
Gregorian calendar.
[Caveat: there may be other interpretations of this zero date, but
generally speaking the consensus is august 13, 3114 BC.]
6. So from that point in time, a complete calendar round ends after 13
baktunes or 13 times 144,000 days, at december 21st, 2012.
Yes, the famous end-date.
Would you believe people actually committed suicide because they
thought the Maya had predicted the end of the world?
One very important thing I need to make clear is that the mayan
thought process is not linear. They believed in cycles of time, every
cycle flowing into the other and starting over and over again.
In a certain way they believed that because these cycles are repetitive
over time that they could somehow “predict” the future by studying the
cycles already past.
The reason the Maya always worshipped the rattle snake is because a
snake sheds its skin. the snake is new life, and every cycle is an
ending but also a new beginning.
Now What Does All Of This Have To Do With Selling, Say You?
Glad you asked..
Imagine you are on a tour bus on your way to the Mayan ruins of
Chichen Itza. I am your tour guide and I have just given you all this
stunning information, and more.
7. You are excited because in a few moments you will have the oportunity
to see all these marvels with your own eyes...
If at this point I were to present you with, say, a means to have your
own personal date (birthday, marriage, divorce, whatever) translated
into Mayan glyphs, would you jump on it?
Who knows maybe I even have a guy next to me of Mayan etnicity
who will address you a few words in his own language, so you can
actually hear how that sounds.
I'll explain to you that your date will be printed on the original bark
paper they used to write their books, made by the women in Chichen
Itza. and of course your personal date comes with a full explanation in
English blablabla.
Would you be interested? I betcha, and I didn't really do any selling, did
I?
The only thing I did was to frame the offer, told my story, and
presented it to you in a way that you can understand its underlying
meaning. With that I added value to it and it’s not just a physical thing
anymore.
Let me tell you, if i have like 40 or 45 people on a bus, I can easily sell
8 to 12 of these things.
Of course I believe in the product, I really like it and I believe it gives
something of value to the buyer who in this case is a tourist.
It’s not merely about the physical product that he or she takes home,
but also the knowing that by buying they actually support the
community and that is not a lie because these people make their living
with it.
I get a commision on each sale, and everybody is happy. No selling,
just storytelling.
8. Now it so happens that three of the greatest copywriting and marketing
minds of today have joined forces to teach their secrets.
These guys are not just anybody, mind you.
Two of them are the sons of the legendary Gary Halbert. If you know
Gary Halbert you probably know that his "Coat of Arms" letter is maybe
the most sent out piece of mail in history.
Meaning you might want to learn a thing or two from Bond and Kevin
who continue their fathers legacy. The other guy is Mark Mcrae who
has done millions and millions of dollars both on- and offline.
Together they have come up with a copywriting and marketing course
that potentially could take your business to the next level. All about
Story Telling, top notch stuff from the best.
Do you think that could be something of interest to you?
