7. • THEME 1: CONNECTION. Pull together. Take the time with and for each other. Embrace
the benefits of social distancing. Use this as a chance to really talk and listen to each
other. Common humanity.
• THEME 2: SILVER LINING (OPPORTUNITY). Use this as a time to reconnect. See it as
a chance to start over for community, society, humanity. Use this as a chance to get
perspective on life. An opportunity to transform society.
• THEME 3: RESPONSIBLE & HEALTHFUL ACTION. There are many practical and
responsible things to do now (e.g., tell others we love them; watch for triggers). Make the
right choice. Practice respect, ingenuity, solitude. Renew, recharge, restore. Slow down.
• THEME 4: HEALTH CONSCIOUSNESS. This is a wake-up call. It is time to practice
health consciousness, stay level headed, watch for (emotional) triggers, practice
intentionality, and use critical thinking,
• THEME 5: SHIFT IN PUBLIC HEALTH & HR SERVICE. Because of how public health
and work service (human resource, social worker) are learning to deal with the Corona
virus, positive shifts in public health and human resources practices may emerge that can
stick around. It is times to apply our understanding of population risks and strengths.

We are given a chance to talk about
powerful topics such as how vulnerable
we all are as a society collectively, and
individually. We are all reminded of the
importance of a healthy body and of
thinking of others in the way of social
distancing.
Practice: Establish proper sleep hygiene
to maintain some normalcy during this
time.

Connecting while distancing is so
important. Especially while adapting to this
new normal. Visually connecting is super
important. So is giving everyone the
permission to wear the multiple hats they
have to juggle all at once now.
Practice: Have a virtual happy hour with
co-worker.
Establish no call times from 11:30-12:30 or
1pm for those who are juggle home
schooling as well.

13. Take this time to process and truly feel
your emotions and define your values. Too
often we are too rushed to figure out what
is important or to nurture ourselves.
Practice: Reconnect with your values and
self-care; build a life you love by
implementing routines that work for you
and your family.

We should use this mandatory stay at
home order as a way of slowing ourselves
down and re-connecting with our loved
ones more completely.
Practice: I have started writing letters to
friends & family. I love the experience of
actually writing and knowing I’m sending a
smile!

We are given a chance to tune into our
first-person experience of ourselves,
just as we are. We are all reminded of the
importance of being present throughout
our day, without feeling the need to ”fix” or
change anything. We can accept the
social distancing guidelines and recognize
nothing is permanent.
Practice: Establish a mindful meditation
practice to tune inwards and create calm.
Even 5 minutes makes a shift!

Look for opportunities to create
connections: inspire joy, ingenuity,
random acts of kindness.
• Chalk drawings in my neighborhood
• Kindness rocks at drive-throughs
• Virtual Zoo, stuffed animals in window
• A $5 bubble gun bubbles on my walks
• Bible studies with Bible app
• Skype/Coffee talks on Resilience
Practice: Get people to smile, wave, and
enjoy their time through small efforts.

When I travel new trails and the way looks
impossible, I’m tempted to freeze or even
turn around (where gravity wants to force
my fall.) At that moment, my buddies pitch
in and guide, direct and cheer me on.
Be that buddy to others. Imagine the
strength we’ll bring to the other side.
Practice: Reflect on challenges that have
helped you grow. Seek opportunities to
encourage yourself and others to
look >>>>> forward >>>>> now.

Throughout my professional network and
at work, I'm seeing an increase in
compassion, care, and concern for
others. I am also seeing an increase in
humility by those in power who previously
portrayed hubris. I hope these shifts stick
around - we need more of it.
Practice: Implement resilience and
compassion tools in your organization.

When dealing with job loss, consider
how this change might actually be a gift.
You are given a reflective opportunity to
contemplate your passion and life’s
work. Discover your internal joy and
where you want your transition to lead
you. Notice opportunities to connect
with others.
Practice: Take personal control over
how you respond to change. Be with
your thoughts, observe them and
choose where to invest your focus.

We can get stuck in negativity loops,
where we keep recycling negative
scenarios, fear, distrust, and worry. We
can choose to move out of that loop and
support ourselves.
Practice: Recognize when you are in a
negativity loop. Take a breath or two and
redirect your attention to beauty, kindness,
and hope.

I have always preached to employees,
“when at home, put away your laptop
and phone because your brain needs a
break.” This can be even more difficult
when the workplace is at home.
Practice: Personally, I have found work
life balance to be more of a challenge
than expected during teleworking. The
successful coping mechanisms I use:
keep a routine take breaks every
couple hours, and keep a separate
space for my “office”.

In order to assist others, we need to first
take care of ourselves. Paying attention to
my body, earlier in the day, often reduces
my back pain...which then allows me to
increase my prosocial focus, throughout
the remainder of the day.
Practice: Altered my workout routine:
substitute daily (dog) walks vs visits to
the gym in-home yoga began using a
Teeter Table (while practicing
Mindfulness) to maintain my mind-body
alignment during these trying times.

We are given the time to truly reflect on
how what we have desired is manifesting
amidst the outbreak. (For example: I want
to spend more time with family or I need a
break and so on.) Perspective and context
are everything.
Practice: Relish the respite. Reflect,
then, journal in order to Renew.
