1898.
Story: quot;The Sniper,quot; Liam O'Flaherty's first published work, is a short story. It
was printed in London in the January 12, 1923, issue of a weekly socialist
publication, The New Leader.

3. Plot.
This short story tells about modern warfare at its darkest when A young man in
a sense can become a fanatical killer for a reason that not many can see
justifiable.

no one cares about your name, what you look like, or what you personally stand

4. Characters.
IRA Sniper: is a young man with tallent in his field, but cocky in the same sense.
He never shows a sign of weakness because of his hostile enviroment,Forced to
use his cunning to over come enemy gun fire he gets the job down one way or
another.

5. Setting.
quot;The Sniperquot; takes place in Ireland's largest city, Dublin, located on the country's
east coast on Dublin Bay, an inlet of the Irish Sea. The time is nightfall in June
after the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922. The sniper posts himself
on a rooftop in central Dublin near the Four Courts building, which houses the
high courts of Ireland, and O'Connell Bridge, which spans the River Liffey. The
Liffey divides the city into two sections as it runs eastward to Dublin Bay.

6. Conflict.
The Constint feeling that your life could be snatched away by a bullet
every waking minute while the Sniper lay ontop of the roof is going
throuhg his mind. When there is activity on the ground the Sniper must
stay hidden even though he must see what is developing below him in
his war torn environment.

7. Theme
War reduces human beings to mere objects. They have no names, no faces.
They are targets, nothing more, to be shot at from a distance. To support this
theme, O'Flaherty refrains from naming any of his characters.
War knows no boundaries–age, sex, location, time of day, family ties. The IRA
sniper is a young man, and the informer is an old woman. The fighting takes
place in the heart of a city after sundown. The IRA sniper unwittingly shoots and
kills his own brother.

8. My Opinion.
I Personally hate to read any type of story but, this
short,suspensful story is worthy of my praise a hundred times
over. I like the short sentence structure that keeps you
entertained and in suspense. I find the end so ironic that it is
worth reading over and over again just so you can understand
each and every detail from beging to end.
