1. Evaluation Activity, Question 4
Who would be the audience for your media product?
12382559055“This is a photograph of a typical audience member. She is 17 years old and lives in the city of London. She dresses simply and likes to keep up with certain fashion trends that are current and in high street shops – where she purchases most of her clothes. She shops in places like River Island, Topshop, H &M and New Look. She enjoys teenage films such as Mean Girls, Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging and St Trinians. She also likes films such as The Bourne Ultimatum and Se7en. At first she watches them in the cinema then buys them on DVD later. Her and her friends watch television programmes such as Hollyoaks, Eastenders, Friends, Sex in the City and Americas Next Top Model. The main channels they watch are MTV, Channel 4, E4, Living TV and Comedy Central. The music this girl would listen to is pop, hip hop and indie music. Radio stations that her and her friends would listen to are Kiss 100, Choice FM AND Radio 1. I think that our film would appeal to this girl as she is stereotypically what we want and who we have made our thriller opening for. If our film was shown at the local cinema we would expect her to go and watch it.”
Our initial research revealed a lot about our target audience’s film preferences, our target audience is teenagers aged 14-18. They preferred action films to foreign, because if people were not familiar with a certain genre and the culture surrounding it they wouldn’t understand and accept it. When asked 79.5% of our target audience enjoy thriller films, this being the majority. The majority of people who answered our questions also enjoyed films set in a realistic environment, therefore the action taking place was more believable - this being why we set our film in a realistic environment.
Professional thriller films similar to ours would be ‘The Orphan’ (2009). The plot is a husband and wife who recently lost their baby adopt a 9-year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she claims to be. This would appeal to an older target audience starting with people in their early 20’s because they are able to understand the more difficult and complex plot.
We have represented a working class black female wanting to adopt in our opening, as well as two young Portuguese children. In our opening we have used two different ethnic groups thus making it appeal to a wider range of people. Also the difference in age makes it appeal to both a young and older audience.
J’Nae Phillips
