Strategic Leadership for
Schools in a Changing Environment

In the rapidly changing world, many institutions of our society are passing through a challenging phase.
The situation is even more complex and critical for educational institutions, particularly for schools. What
happens in schools today is likely to determine what will happen in our society in future. It also seems
to be true that often there are no definite or perfect answers for the issues being faced by schools today.
It is our contention that the principal of a school has the most pivotal role in shaping the destiny of the
school. As the administrative and academic head, the principal has a unique leadership role which can be
immensely challenging and highly rewarding at the same time. However, for effectively responding to the
challenges, an exchange of ideas and practices is critical. The programme will focus on the multiple roles
and responsibilities of the school principal, provide space to examine issues that most principals face today,
and facilitate evolving a strategic response for a better future for schools.

•	 Introducing and managing change at institutional level
•	 Managing human resources and implementing suitable systems of appraisal, evaluation, and 	
feedback for teachers and staff
•	 Interpersonal communication and team building
•	 Issues in teacher development
•	 Establishing effective interface with all the stakeholders
•	 Achieving excellence through innovations in pedagogy
•	 Role of information technology in promoting excellence in schools
•	 Managing innovations in schools
•	 Right to education and its implication
This programme, 15th in the series, draws from in-depth and extensive research conducted by IIMA faculty
about schools in the Indian context. It utilizes a mix of participative pedagogy that includes context-
specific case studies from schools across the country, structured exercises, role play, group discussions, and
presentations. The programme will provide adequate opportunity for participants to discuss and examine
their current practices, share their experiences, and learn from each other.
Eligibility for the programme: Principals of senior secondary schools (with classes up to XIIth) affiliated to
state, national or international boards.

Programme Fee and Location
The programme will be conducted in the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Management Development Centre (KLMDC)
located in our campus. A fee of Rs. 44,944/- is chargeable (Programme fee Rs. 40,000/- and service tax @
12.36%) for the programme which will cover boarding, lodging in AC rooms on twin sharing basis, tuition,
cost of the programme material, and local travel related to the programme.
Interested candidates may send the fee through a demand draft payable to ‘Indian Institute of Management’
at Ahmedabad, addressed to Manager MDP, Indian Institute of Management, Vastrapur, Ahmedbad-380015.
There are limited seats in the programme. Registration will be entertained on a first-cum-first-serve basis.
The programme fee can be paid in one of these three ways:
A.	 Demand draft/cheque payable at par at Ahmedabad
	 The cheque/draft should be in favour of “Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.”
B.	 Electronic Fund Transfer. The relevant details are:

Nominations and Inquiries
Nominations should reach the Manager - MDP latest by September 16, 2013.
Organizational sponsorship is generally required but can be waived in case the participant is likely to gain
significantly from the programme for personal improvement or greater job effectiveness.
All nominations are subject to review and approval by the programme faculty (usually after the due date for
receiving nominations). A formal acceptance letter will be sent to selected nominees accordingly. Nominees
are requested to make their travel plans only after receiving the acceptance letter.
IIMA norms do not allow anyone to stay with the participants during the programme.

Alumni Association
Please note that participants who are attending short-duration MDPs for the first time, on or after April 1,
2012 will have to attend a total of 21 days in one or more programmes to be eligible for alumni status and
alumni identity card, both of which will be awarded on payment of one-time Alumni fee of Rs.10,000/-.
Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA)
IIMA was set up by the Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat and Indian
industry as an autonomous institution in 1961. The Institute provides education, training, consulting, and
research facilities in management.
The Institute conducts the following major programmes:
•	 Two-Year Post-Graduate Programme in Management (equivalent to MBA)
•	 Two-Year Post-Graduate Programme in Agri-business Management (equivalent to MBA)
•	 Fellow Programme in Management (equivalent to Ph.D.)
•	 One-year Post-Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX, equivalent to MBA)
•	 Management Development Programmes (MDPs) for industry, business, agricultural and rural sectors,
and public systems covering education, health, transport, and population. In the last 50 years, over
47,450 managers have participated in various MDPs
•	 Faculty Development Programme for teachers in universities and colleges
The institute has about 90 faculty members working in the following management areas and sectors:

Kasturbhai Lalbhai Management Development Centre (KLMDC) located on the IIMA main campus and
International Management Development Centre (IMDC), located on the new campus, provide an academic
and learning environment for participants of the Management Development Programmes. All rooms at
KLMDC and IMDC are air-conditioned and have internet connectivity. They have separate dining halls, a
reading lounge, classrooms and auditorium (with audio-visual and computer projection facilities), syndicate
rooms, computer lab. The campus is wi-fi enabled. Recreation facilities exist for indoor and outdoor games
(badminton, TT, carom, chess, volleyball and cricket). Participants can also take advantage of the Institute’s
library.

Strategic Leadership for Schools in a Changing Environment September 30 - October 05, 2013 In the rapidly changing world, many institutions of our society are passing through a challenging phase. The situation is even more complex and critical for educational institutions, particularly for schools. What happens in schools today is likely to determine what will happen in our society in future. It also seems to be true that often there are no definite or perfect answers for the issues being faced by schools today. It is our contention that the principal of a school has the most pivotal role in shaping the destiny of the school. As the administrative and academic head, the principal has a unique leadership role which can be immensely challenging and highly rewarding at the same time. However, for effectively responding to the challenges, an exchange of ideas and practices is critical. The programme will focus on the multiple roles and responsibilities of the school principal, provide space to examine issues that most principals face today, and facilitate evolving a strategic response for a better future for schools. Areas to be Explored • Strategic management and decision-making • Elements of visionary leadership • Introducing and managing change at institutional level • Managing human resources and implementing suitable systems of appraisal, evaluation, and feedback for teachers and staff • Interpersonal communication and team building • Issues in teacher development • Establishing effective interface with all the stakeholders • Achieving excellence through innovations in pedagogy • Role of information technology in promoting excellence in schools • Managing innovations in schools • Right to education and its implication This programme, 15th in the series, draws from in-depth and extensive research conducted by IIMA faculty about schools in the Indian context. It utilizes a mix of participative pedagogy that includes context- specific case studies from schools across the country, structured exercises, role play, group discussions, and presentations. The programme will provide adequate opportunity for participants to discuss and examine their current practices, share their experiences, and learn from each other. Eligibility for the programme: Principals of senior secondary schools (with classes up to XIIth) affiliated to state, national or international boards.

A fee of Rs. 44,944/- is chargeable (Programme fee Rs. 40,000/- and service tax @ 12.36%) for the programme which will cover boarding, lodging in AC rooms on twin sharing basis, tuition, cost of the programme material, and local travel related to the programme. Organizational sponsorship is generally required but can be waived in case the participant is likely to gain significantly from the programme for personal improvement or greater job effectiveness. All nominations are subject to review and approval by the programme faculty (usually after the due date for receiving nominations). A formal acceptance letter will be sent to selected nominees accordingly. Nominees are requested to make their travel plans only after receiving the acceptance letter. Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) IIMA was set up by the Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat and Indian industry as an autonomous institution in 1961. The Institute provides education, training, consulting, and research facilities in management. Matthai Centre for Educational Innovation Kasturbhai Lalbhai Management Development Centre (KLMDC) located on the IIMA main campus and International Management Development Centre (IMDC), located on the new campus, provide an academic and learning environment for participants of the Management Development Programmes. All rooms at KLMDC and IMDC are air-conditioned and have internet connectivity. They have separate dining halls, a reading lounge, classrooms and auditorium (with audio-visual and computer projection facilities), syndicate rooms, computer lab. The campus is wi-fi enabled. Recreation facilities exist for indoor and outdoor games (badminton, TT, carom, chess, volleyball and cricket). Participants can also take advantage of the Institute’s library.
