Practice
Jim is the Co-founder and Managing Partner of Symons Markwith LLP’s Seattle area office. Jim’s clients
range from start-ups to multi-national publically traded corporations, representing a range of industries and
offerings, including Healthcare IT, computer software, data analytics, standards development organizations
(SDOs), technology application publishers, and other emerging technologies and services.
Jim is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Washington School of Law’s Master of Laws (LLM) in IP
Program. From 1995 to 2005 he taught IP and Technology law classes at the Santa Clara University’s Law
and MBA programs.
Prior to starting his own firm, Jim practiced law in Silicon Valley, and held in-house executive and senior in-
house legal positions with Adobe Systems, Microsoft, General Electric Healthcare IT, and Allscripts
Healthcare.
Jim is a member of the California, Washington State and Washington DC Bars. He received his J.D. from
the Santa Clara University School of Law, and earned a B.S. in Finance from the California State University
at Long Beach.
Prior to his legal career Jim was a U.S. Navy Instructor Pilot, and he taught Economics at the U.S. Naval
Academy at Annapolis MD.
