FON 752 –LED Lighting Retrofit
(Green Initiative)
Situation:
Saia’s support for green initiatives is a key strategic goal within the company and
is constantly being reviewed in association with the Maintenance and Properties
team. Identifying strategic facilities for implementation of such projects is an
ongoing directive. The condition of the lighting systems at Saia’s Fontana facility
had become significantly degraded over the years and lamp failure was
becoming a common occurrence. It had been almost ten years since the aging
lights had been installed during an expansion of the terminal back in 2004.
Solution:
The systems in place could have been re‐lamped extending the useful life,
however new technologies which are now available such as LED and energy
efficient fluorescent lighting allow for a significant energy reduction in turn
creating a reduced energy bill. Saia’s real estate team decided to pursue a
solution that would provide a better long term return on investment as well as a
more environmentally friendly solution. Saia reached out to multiple lighting
distributers to attain various design and product solutions to achieve the three
goals, reduce operational maintenance and energy costs, provide sufficient
lighting and reduce Saia’s carbon footprint.
End Result:
Saia ultimately decided to partner with a company who specialized in LED
lighting technology and developed a plan to replace and retrofit all fixtures
located on the premise with the latest LED technology. The LED solution
provided multiple advantages over the competition such as metal halide and
fluorescent technology including extended useful life of 50,000 to 100,000 hours
as opposed to 20,000 to 40,000 hours and in the case of fluorescent technology
harmful environmental contaminants contained within the lamping solution.
The project was completed December of 2013 and by all accounts the facilities
lighting has drastically improved ensuring a safe and secure work environment
for years to come.
