This document provides instructions for importing text files from online databases into RefWorks. It uses the example of importing a file from the NCBI PubMed database on the search terms "biological invasions AND marine ecosystems". The steps include conducting the search in PubMed, selecting an article, choosing to send it to a file in text format, saving the file, going to RefWorks, selecting "Import" and browsing to select the saved text file. This allows adding references to RefWorks from databases without a direct import feature.

Electronic Databases

Choose PubMed from the electronic database list

First conduct a search in the search
box.
As an example, use the terms:
biological invasions AND marine
ecosystems
Secondly, click ‘Search’

article you wish to
import

1. Click on the down
arrow next to
Send to:
2. Choose File
3. Under Format
choose MEDLINE
4. Click on Create File

Choose Save
File and then
OK

The file is a text file (.txt)
 Choose File and ‘Save as’
 Name and Save the file as
a .txt file.
 Close the file.

Go to RefWorks and Choose
‘Import’ in the ‘References’
toolbar.

In the Data Source Field choose NLM PubMed
In the Database Field choose PubMed

Click ‘Browse’ to find
the text file that you
saved previously

you saved
previously and
then click
‘Open’

file – select all the text and
then copy it into the ‘From
Text’ box. Choose ‘Import’
Click ‘Import’
