State of the Industry
To date, industry has deployed application-based solutions:
• Approximately 30 million smart meters deployed in U.S.; 62 million under contract
• 65 million smart meters projected to be deployed by 2015; represents half of the
U.S. market opportunity
• Majority of AMI local area networks are mesh wireless, tower-based RF, with some
power line communications and cellular
• Private field area networks projected to surpass 14 million nodes annually by
2020*

Where Do We Focus as Value
Shifts Away From Smart Meters?
Wi-Fi = wireless fidelity
Wi-Fi is a registered trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance Corporation in the United States and/or other countries.
Applications or Architecture?
• Use a standards-based approach
– Apply standards in developing smart
grid infrastructure to economic and longevity
reasons
– Why not leverage the consumer
– What is the role of cellular, Wi-Fi®
• Should we incorporate existing,
ubiquitous communications
technologies
• What is the role for IP-based
communications systems?
– Apply Internet-based protocols
(where available) as the standard
for transport layer
• How do we complement/augment centralized with
distributed processing?
- Distribute the processing/intelligence to help
alleviate latency and cost-of-transport issues
associated with the anticipated heavy volumes of
data
• What is the role for Edge Diagnostics
– Leverage multiple and existing
communications
– Local data access
– Distributed processing
9
What Is the Role of Cellular?
TOTAL CELLULAR
• Total cellular connections
estimated at ~6.3 billion, while
total global population at >7
billion
Wireless Intelligence,Jul. ¹12, UN
Database,Dec. ¹11
3G/4G
• ~1.8 billion 3G connections globally as of Q2
2012, ~28% of total mobile connections, leaving
a long runway for growth
Wireless Intelligence,Jul. Œ12
• 2G connections expected to begin declining
starting from 2014
Wireless Intelligence,Jul. Œ12
• ~85 million 3G connections were added
during Q2 2012, or about ~1 million new
connections / day
Wireless Intelligence,Jul. Œ12
• ~3.4 billion estimated 3G connections by 2016
Wireless Intelligence,Jul. Œ12
• 89 LTE networks launched in 45 countries,
280 commitments in 90 countries
GSA as of Jul. '12
M2M
• Machine-to-Machine device
connections globally will grow
by a factor of 20 in the next 10
years (2011-2021)
AnalysisMason, May '12
3G/4G = generation

What Is the Role of Wi-Fi? It Brings
Unrivaled Success
Source: Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi = wireless fidelity
• 10 percent of the world’s population uses Wi-Fi®
• Approximately 2 billion cumulative shipments of
Wi-Fi to date
• Annual double-digit growth
• Ubiquitous in home, enterprise, industry,
education,
and government environments
• Consumers love Wi-Fi:
– 7 out of 10 users would give up chocolate
before Wi-Fi
Kelton Research, 2008
– 73 percent of university students say Wi-Fi
helps them
get better grades
Wakefield Research, 2008
Wi-Fi is a registered trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance Corporation in the United States and/or other countries.

What Is the Role of Edge Analytics?
Communications Node Enables Distributed Management
• Communications nexus for an
integrated network
– WAN communications
– LAN communications
modularity (Wi-Fi®, PLC,
ERT)
– Distributed grid
management enabled by
local processing and
memory
– Energy sensing applications
current, voltage, power
quality, power factor
