AACR2 is a content standard for cataloguing library materials that provides rules for descriptive cataloguing. It aims to allow users to efficiently retrieve information. AACR2 describes how to organize information about resources by various elements like title, creator, publication details, and subjects. It also provides rules for constructing standardized access points to group works by a common creator or title. AACR2 has gone through several revisions since it was first published in 1967 and was succeeded in 2010 by RDA, though AACR2 is still widely used.
2. Cataloguing
Organizing a library materials in an effective manner
according to standardized rules and practices in order to
allow users to retrieve information quickly, and
ultimately
Whether the retrieval system is a card catalogue (ISBD)
or an automated catalogue (MARC)

3. Definitions
AACR = content standard for resource description and
access
MARC = communication and exchange format providing
a structure for encoding the content of bibliographic and
authority data
ISBD = rules that organise the display of a bibliographic
description of an item in a catalogue

4. Why AACR2?
Growth of libraries
Extensions of catalogue processes
Bibliographic services
With the time of mechanization:
Growth of centralized and cooperative bibliographic
services and networks
Development and unification of services in the national
Libraries
Main objective: Develop an international cataloguing
code in order to exchange of bibliographic data

requirements of second-level description (AACR2, rule
1.0D2)
-Core-level cataloging: Records that meet the
requirements of first-level description (AACR2, rule
1.0D1) and some of the requirements of second-level

11. Types of cataloguing
Original cataloguing: For MARC records, when you
input a new master record cataloged according to
current cataloging practices and AACR2. the library code
is mentioned in the field 040 (code 040##|aLB-ChIUL)
Copy cataloguing: A MARC record exists. You modify
the record for local use and create a copy of the record
with your modifications. (040##|aLC|bLB-ChIUL)
Transcribing cataloging copy: You create a master
record using an existing non-MARC record
(040##|aLC|bLC|cLB-CIUL)

12. AACR2 Key principles
• One principle entry per resource
Authority/access point control it is the process
whereby consistency of form is maintained in the
headings (names, uniform titles, series titles,
subjects), retrievable form authority
files/vocabularies

• Chief source of information
(e. g. The title page is the chief source of information‖
If a book has no title page, use the cover, the
half-title page or the caption…)

14. e.g. Title rule
• Transcribe the title
proper just as it
appears in the title

information) TITLE
• Transcribe exactly all
the words of the title
proper = do not omit
any words
• Items lacking a title =

16. AACR2 Key principles
• Punctuation: AACR2R punctuation is according to
International Standard Bibliographic Description
(ISBD).
―punctuation must be correct: some systems will not
save a record without the correct punctuation, or will
save it incorrectly‖!
