2. MTV
MTV, originally an initialise of Music Television, is
an American cable television channel based in New
York City that launched on August 1, 1981.
The original purpose of the channel was to play
music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJs.
Today, MTV primarily broadcasts a variety of reality
and scripted television programs targeted at
adolescents and young adults.
3. OTHER CHANNELS OF MTV
MTV has spawned numerous sister channels in the
U.S. and affiliated channels internationally, some of
which have gone independent.
MTV's influence on its audience, including issues
related to censorship and social activism, has been
a subject of debate for years.
MTV Base, MTV Dance, MTV2 are all for different
genres.
4. MTV
MTV again resurrected the long-running series MTV
Unplugged in 2009 with performances from acts such as
Adele, Katy Perry, and Paramore.
However, unlike past Unplugged specials, these new
recordings usually only aired in their entirety on MTV's
website, MTV.com. Nevertheless, short clips of the
specials are shown on MTV during the AMTV block of
music videos in the early morning hours.
On June 12, 2011, MTV aired a traditional TV premiere
of a new installment of MTV Unplugged instead of a web
debut. The featured artist was rapper Lil Wayne and the
show debuted both on MTV and MTV2. The channel
followed up with a similar TV premiere of MTV
Unplugged with Florence and the Machine on April
8, 2012.
5. MTV
MTV launched a new talk show based on hip hop
music on April 12, 2012, called Hip Hop
POV, hosted by Amanda Seales, Bu
Thiam, Charlamagne, Devi Dev and Sowmya
Krishnamurthy.
The show features said hosts who give
commentary on the news making headlines in hip
hop culture, provide their opinions on new
music, grant insider access to the biggest events
and engage in artist interviews
6. MTV …
MTV launched 10 on Top in May 2010, hosted by Lenay
Dunn. 10 on Top is a weekly program airing on
Saturdays that counts down the top 10 most trending
and talked about topics of the week.
Lenay Dunn also appeared in segments between MTV's
shows throughout the day as a recognizable personality
and face of the channel in the absence of traditional VJs
aside from its MTV News correspondents. Season 3 is
scheduled to begin on October 13, 2012.
The animated series Beavis and Butt-head returned to
MTV in October 2011 with new episodes. As with the
original version of the series that ran from 1993 to
1997, the modern-day Beavis and Butt-head features
segments in which its main characters watch and
criticize music videos.
7. KERRANG!
In 2001 EMAP launched Kerrang! TV.
As with the radio station, the television channel
covers the more mainstream side of the rock music
as well as classic rock bands like Aerosmith and
AC/DC, and classic heavy metal bands such as
Guns N' Roses and Metallica.
Kerrang TV is now a joint venture between Bauer
Media Group and Channel 4.
8. CHANNEL AKA
Channel AKA (formerly Channel U) is a British
digital satellite TV channel, owned by All Around the
World Productions, available through Sky within the
UK and Ireland on channel 370.
It is a music channel, focusing on playing upcoming
UK urban/grime/hip-hop music and has helped the
breakthrough for acts such as Tinchy Stryder, Tinie
Tempah, Chipmunk, Wretch 32, Devlin and N-Dubz.
9. VIVA
In the United Kingdom and Republic of
Ireland, VIVA launched on 26 October
2009, replacing TMF it has a completely different
logo to the other countries.
