Representation of male and female artists within country-pop music
1. Billy Ray Cyrus
Billy Ray Cyrus is an American country/country pop singer born in 1961 who as well as
singing, plays the guitar and piano.
Billy has created 12 studio albums and has had 44 singles released since 1992; those of which
have been translated into 100 different languages. He had a number one with ‘Achy breaky
heart’ which was the first ever single to achieve triple platinum status in Australia. Billy Ray
Cyrus has had 8 top ten singles on Billboard Country Songs. He also produced 35 charted
singles, these of which 15 charted in the top 40.
2. Shania Twain
Shania Twain is a Canadian country pop singer that was born in 1965, who as well as singing
plays the guitar.
Her song ‘come on over’ became the best selling studio album of all time by a female artist in
any genre of music. She also had the best selling country album of all time and won 5 Grammy
Awards. Shania sold more than85 million albums worldwide.
3. Billy Ray Cyrus
How is he represented as an artist in his hit single, ‘change my mind’?
Traditional Modern
-Cowboy hat -Tattoos (not
(typical male seen on many
accessory) country pop
-Sunglasses artists, ‘bad
(not showing boy’
emotions) connotations
-Desert
background
(fitting to
genre)
I think that Billy Ray Cyrus has been represented as
a traditional artist in the country-pop genre of
music. Although he has tattoo’s which doesn’t fit in
with the ‘godly’ connotations of country music;
these shots from the music video portray him to be
a traditional male in this in this genre.
4. Shania Twain
How is she represented as an artist in her hit single, ‘man I feel like a women’?
Traditional Modern
-Red lipstick -Men wearing
(feminine) makeup
-Heavy eye -Men standing
makeup behind the
-Cleavage female (she is
showing the main focus)
-Face covered -Female wearing
with netting to a male accessory
seem mysterious (top hat could
show a form of
defence)
I think that Shania Twain has been represented in
this music video as a modern female artist with in
the country-pop genre. Although she is still
appealing to the male gaze by being ‘sexy’ I do think
that with the male band behind her and the male
accessories she looks like a strong female figure .
