“At least three dimensions have an impact on
how to approach the sustainability issues: the
size of the operation (small or large), the type
of provider (institution or community) and the
level of integration of users in the production
                            process (co-production or producer-
                            consumer model).”

Cyclical Approach, that staff should use and develop OER. Be consumers and creators.
The project should be adaptable for the needs of the implementation

This model allowed us to be flexible in terms of communication. We could liaise with each area as and when they were available.

Originally set out to manage the quality centrally but soon appreciated that this had limited long term sustainability.
Diversity of subjects meant that faculties were in a better position to identify the quality of the material.
Advised to release material which had been through at least one academic cycle (in essence so that it had been through the
institutions own quality review process).
Faculty staff in a much better position to see the value of material than a central OER team.
Quality vs Usefulness (who are we to decide?)
The preferred model of quality assessment for Unicycle OER materials is user evaluated (e.g. star rated). Whilst this will not be
implemented in time for the project completion it is anticipated that this approach be implemented as part of a longer term
strategy.

           http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com
All materials would be released under CC: BY-NC-SA (Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike) or
BY-NC-ND (Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives)
Checking the materials which staff submitted was a time consuming process.
Challenge of IPR

           http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com
Then we hit our first major hurdle! We realised people didn’t really know what OER or IPR
was!
So then began our staff development workshops on IPR & copyright.
Over 250 staff have benefitted from our staff development workshops/events this year.
In 99% of cases we have either removed images or replaced with CC versions.
In the cases where images or copyright material is required it is processed by our copyright
clearance officer.

http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com
By the end of the project.
Faculty co-ordinator’s undertake some of the submission of the materials as this is the preferred long term model
rather than a central submission system. Initially Faculty co-ordinator’s will collect and submit the OER resources
within their area (this will likely require specific staff allocation of duty of approximately 1 day a week, but
dependent on the amount of OER material being released within a Faculty). Longer term the institution may wish to
consider making available to every member of staff (subject to appropriate staff development) the ability to submit
OER materials.
http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com
Longer term? - Maybe this model but this has quality control & ipr issues!

         http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com

R&R was an important step in a sustainable model. Is money the only option? Is there an
appropriate model for financial gain? Unicycle project is focussed on staff volunteering their
materials.
1 - OER is part of the performance development review process. (Staff get recognised for
releasing OER material)
2 - Embedding processes is key.

                                           Future
•OER has been agreed as institutional strategy
•OER set as faculty role (usually a Principal Lecturer)
    • Implemented as a 2009-2011 ALT priority
    • Embed IPR & copyright training in staff induction
    • Embed OER consideration as part of course
    validation process
    • Set OER annual targets for use & release

               http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com
academic board (quality enhancement committee) have agreed to formally implement OER as
an ALT strategy within the University.
Leeds OER Manifesto
            http://cloudworks.ac.uk/cloud/view/3676

“We went to Leeds, shared experiences,
listened to some presentations (check these out
                       at www.slideshare.net/score and blogs of
sessions in the OER and sustainability
Cloudscape.) Then we discussed OER and
sustainability, did an activity and after lunch we
wrote our 'Leeds manifesto'. Not bad for a
                       day's work.”

our work is benefitting others - development of a leeds manifesto
Leeds OER Manifesto
 http://www8.open.ac.uk/score/
1. We need to recognise the effort and time required to move to sustainable OER
 2. Wider exposure of academic staff to OER (building awareness of supply) is important
 3. Staff development – ideally accredited by HEA - is key, especially for new academic staff
 4. Sector-wide sharing needs to be encouraged and if possible incentivised.
 5. Evidence of effectiveness in use would be ‘massively’ helpful
 6. We need usable tools (e.g. for dissemination and deposit) which maximise the benefit for
    minimum effort
 7. The move to OER should be widely recognised as good for UK HE
 8. We need policies/practices which offer clear rewards for ‘open’ behaviour
 9. Institutions need to ‘turn over stones’ even when they fear what lurks beneath
10.Be confident in your own resources, even when they are ‘dirty’ (not pristine or polished)
11.Identify and acknowledge the important risks – and prepare for them
12.Prepare for other sources/creators of OER

  • 12. Central OER Support http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com 3 CETL Projects agreed to release materials under OER as part of their project dissemination
  • 13. Central OER Support http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com University support services centres including employability office, skills for learning & Leeds Met you tube teaching channel. This model also allows us to adapt and change. This model allowed us to be flexible in terms of communication. We could liaise with each area as and when they were available.
  • 14. Faculty / Area Co-Ordinator Roles • to manage content locally • oversee quality • cascade IPR advice and support • co-ordinate events / workshops • raise awareness • submit content to repository • liaise with central OER team • feedback on process Central • share good practice OER Support http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com University support services centres including employability office, skills for learning & Leeds Met you tube teaching channel. This model also allows us to adapt and change.
  • 15. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lenore-m http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com Originally set out to manage the quality centrally but soon appreciated that this had limited long term sustainability. Diversity of subjects meant that faculties were in a better position to identify the quality of the material. Advised to release material which had been through at least one academic cycle (in essence so that it had been through the institutions own quality review process). Faculty staff in a much better position to see the value of material than a central OER team. Quality vs Usefulness (who are we to decide?) The preferred model of quality assessment for Unicycle OER materials is user evaluated (e.g. star rated). Whilst this will not be implemented in time for the project completion it is anticipated that this approach be implemented as part of a longer term strategy.
  • 16. http://www.flickr.com/photos/horiavarlan http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com All materials would be released under CC: BY-NC-SA (Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike) or BY-NC-ND (Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives) Checking the materials which staff submitted was a time consuming process.
  • 17. Challenge of IPR http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com Then we hit our first major hurdle! We realised people didn’t really know what OER or IPR was! So then began our staff development workshops on IPR & copyright. Over 250 staff have benefitted from our staff development workshops/events this year. In 99% of cases we have either removed images or replaced with CC versions. In the cases where images or copyright material is required it is processed by our copyright clearance officer.
  • 18. OER Support http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com Current model of deposit.
  • 19. OER Support http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com Current model of deposit.
  • 20. http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com By the end of the project. Faculty co-ordinator’s undertake some of the submission of the materials as this is the preferred long term model rather than a central submission system. Initially Faculty co-ordinator’s will collect and submit the OER resources within their area (this will likely require specific staff allocation of duty of approximately 1 day a week, but dependent on the amount of OER material being released within a Faculty). Longer term the institution may wish to consider making available to every member of staff (subject to appropriate staff development) the ability to submit OER materials.
  • 21. http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com Longer term? - Maybe this model but this has quality control & ipr issues!
  • 22. http://www.flickr.com/photos/l2f1/ http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com R&R was an important step in a sustainable model. Is money the only option? Is there an appropriate model for financial gain? Unicycle project is focussed on staff volunteering their materials. 1 - OER is part of the performance development review process. (Staff get recognised for releasing OER material) 2 - Embedding processes is key.
  • 23. Hearts & Minds. http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com Those respondents who have undertaken the OER workshop.
  • 24. http://www.flickr.com/photos/benleto/ Future •OER has been agreed as institutional strategy •OER set as faculty role (usually a Principal Lecturer) • Implemented as a 2009-2011 ALT priority • Embed IPR & copyright training in staff induction • Embed OER consideration as part of course validation process • Set OER annual targets for use & release http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com academic board (quality enhancement committee) have agreed to formally implement OER as an ALT strategy within the University.
  • 25. Leeds OER Manifesto http://cloudworks.ac.uk/cloud/view/3676 “We went to Leeds, shared experiences, listened to some presentations (check these out at www.slideshare.net/score and blogs of sessions in the OER and sustainability Cloudscape.) Then we discussed OER and sustainability, did an activity and after lunch we wrote our 'Leeds manifesto'. Not bad for a day's work.” Chris Pegler - OER Manifesto, Leeds, UK http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com our work is benefitting others - development of a leeds manifesto
  • 26. Leeds OER Manifesto http://www8.open.ac.uk/score/ 1. We need to recognise the effort and time required to move to sustainable OER 2. Wider exposure of academic staff to OER (building awareness of supply) is important 3. Staff development – ideally accredited by HEA - is key, especially for new academic staff 4. Sector-wide sharing needs to be encouraged and if possible incentivised. 5. Evidence of effectiveness in use would be ‘massively’ helpful 6. We need usable tools (e.g. for dissemination and deposit) which maximise the benefit for minimum effort 7. The move to OER should be widely recognised as good for UK HE 8. We need policies/practices which offer clear rewards for ‘open’ behaviour 9. Institutions need to ‘turn over stones’ even when they fear what lurks beneath 10.Be confident in your own resources, even when they are ‘dirty’ (not pristine or polished) 11.Identify and acknowledge the important risks – and prepare for them 12.Prepare for other sources/creators of OER http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com
  • 27. http://repository.leedsmet.ac.uk http://unicycle-leedsmet.ning.com released over 250 resources.
