UK Federation URL Generator

My role within our team is to build support and maintain the underlying infrastructures that support the University Library.Today we will focus on Authentication and how we as a team have worked with suppliers and overcome many of the barriers and hurdles that seem to be in place.Part of this session will be a Live Demo of our library system.
The Service Provider configures Shibboleth SP / OpenAthens SP at their end. But each Service Provider chooses to implement things differently and this has resulted in a multitude of terms for users to navigate through. Our users found this rather confusing.
Our core role as a team is to make it easy to find and access our entire resource collection. We use a number of methods to get a user from A to B, but all authenticate using our identity provider system OpenAthens LA.
If the service supports access via the UK Federation or directly via our OpenAthens LA idp, then this would be the default access method. If they support IP we use EZProxy, which is authenticated via our idp as a local service. If the service does not support any of our authentication mechanisms we would probably look elsewhere.
OpenAthens LA was chosen over Shibboleth as our idp due to the relative ease of both installing and managing the system.
OpenAthens LA is provided as virtual machine images which drop straight into our virtual server environment, so there is no need to build the server from scratch as you would with Shibboleth.
Our system is supported by the OpenAthens service desk, if we need help I can raise a call and one of the team will assist with a call or remote session if necessary.
What does ‘Single Sign On’ mean to your organisation ?This is our Definition. A user is challenged once and asked to enter their details. As long as the browser session remains they should not be asked to enter their details again. This provides our users with seamless access to all but a handful of privately published journals, such as The Bookseller.
How have we accomplished this ?WAYFless links are the methods that we have used to take our users from our Catalogue to a resource. Most services allow the use of WAYFless links. A few suppliers will not allow you to enter a Username and Password and then take you to Article Level. You will need to create an authenticated session with the service first.
This is an example of how we link our users into the Jstor front page. Our Exlibris products allow us to append sufficient details to take you direct to an Article or Title.
The UK Access Management Federation have created a rather good WAYFless URL Generator. This works for the vast majority of registered SP’s.To link at article or title level you will need to append additional information to the URL which would usually be managed by your link resolver or catalogue software.
