• Culture and language are having a
negative impact on the drug development
process.
• Pharmaceutical firms are not obtaining the
full benefit of the diversity that exists within
the organization.
4. Today’s Objectives
• Explore the impact of culture, language
and geography on team performance.
• Offer a series of suggestions for
enhancing team effectiveness.
• This will not be a cross-cultural training
program.
5. Why Address These Issues?
• Will speed up the drug development
process.
• Bring drugs to market more quickly.
• Will enhance the bottom line.
6. Mistaken Assumptions
• Everyone speaks English so we all
understand each other.
• Our corporate culture is the same
everywhere.
• We are all scientists, so we speak the
same language.
• We have technology, which allows
everyone to participate.
8. Language
Basic Principles:
• English is the expected language of this
industry.
• Not everyone speaks English.
• Most non-Americans have learned British
English.
• They do not learn jargon, jokes or sports
analogies.
