Why?
The mobile trend is changing everything – the proliferation of smart phones and tablets is altering the way
executives and investors are engaging with information. As a result, company investor relations groups are
adjusting how they operate. The following key factors are the primary drivers of this:
1. Increasingly, executives and investors desire access to information anytime, anywhere, on their
mobile devices,
2. Need to increase efficiency in delivering information, resulting in significant expense savings to the
Company,
3. Desire to improve investors’ perception of the company (i.e., the way they communicate needs to
be consistent with the message they are delivering – “we are company that is relevant and we
accept and embrace change”),
4. A desire for a greener and more efficient environment. Companies are becoming more focused on
sustainability, and operating in a more environmentally friendly way. And, of course, a side benefit
of that is a significant gain in efficiency.
A few relevant points regarding mobile…
“What matters is that in the next five years every person on this planet is going to be using a mobile device.
And these devices are going to be used far more than any traditional computer ever has been and ever will
be.”

Overview (…Operating In A Digital Era)
November 2012
“The main continuous trend identified in the report is that everything is going mobile. This evolution is
mainly being driven by people's increasing demand for anywhere, anytime connectivity and the use of video,
cloud-based services and the internet - but also by machine-to-machine connectivity.”

“Consumers are migrating away from PC-based Internet usage and are increasingly using mobile devices as
their default gateway to the Internet. According to IDC, the U.S. is leading this trend, with Western Europe
and Japan only about two years behind.”

What?
Executives are addressing some of the following questions when they evaluate their IR workflow…
1. Where are our expenses out-of-line? Do we have an opportunity by going digital?
2. How can we improve our workflow by going significantly digital (“paper-lite”, rather than paperless)
3. Will this benefit our “customers” (customers defined as the groups you serve – management, board
of directors, investors, analysts – buy-side, sell-side, etc.)
4. How are our customer’s expectations changing? Are we being proactive in addressing those?
5. How do we organize, track and find things?
6. We are still doing things the same way they were done 3-5 years ago? What are the obvious
opportunities?
7. What are other companies doing?
8. How do we develop a “change-oriented” culture? How do we manage the change?
9. How do we transition our company’s IR reporting (business intelligence/analytics) onto the mobile
devices that our executives are carrying?

“By 2013, mobile is expected to be the first screen for all Web usage. What does this mean for IR? Well,
it means your IR website will probably be viewed on a smartphone or tablet.”
“Increase productivity and collaboration by using a tablet – ideal for when you’re on the road or in the
office. Imagine not having to print a 30-slide investor presentation to prepare for a meeting because you
can view it and add notes to it directly from your tablet. Or pulling up the most recent sell-side research
report to understand investor sentiment from a cab on your way to an investor meeting.”
