UK participants have by far the worst backup habbits for workstations. In France 69% of companies back up theirworkstationsautomactically. In Germany 63% do. Only 5% and 9% respectively do not back up workstationsat all in comparison to the shocking resultsfrom the UK IDC (who are sitting in the audience) alsoannouncedjust a couple of weeksagothatmore than half (53%) of all organisations have deployed a software or service for PC backup. Whilst it’s encouraging to see an increasing number of organisations are using a software/service for PC backup and recovery, it’s worth pointing out that the research does flag that nearly a third (32.5%) of organisations are relying on individual employees to back up data themselves.

There are many myths around Disaster Recovery.The first myth is that there is no margin in Data Backup or DR. With some vendors you are only going to make 3-5%. However Acronis solutions are not over distributed and we want to ensure that there is a healthy margin for all our partners that take Acronis solutions to market. We have invested time in building a number of tools such as the AOR programme that ensures there is additional margin in projects that are identified by proactive partners. This will be discussed further in the programmes sections.There is also plenty of margin in the Mystery of DR. Most organisations have a coherent backup strategy in place but when you move onto the subject of Disaster Recovery it is often a different story.First of all Backup is not DR, it is only part of the solution. In many instances if you cannot recover to dissimilar hardware or execute BMR without installing individual drivers, agents and the OS you are not going to be able to meet challenging Recovery Time Objectives.These are the same challenges when using tape. At Storage Expo we were talking to one of the UK’s largest Building Societies who backup to tape. They recently tested their recovery time from tape. To restore one non-critical server it took just over 72 hours. This is quite frightening if think of the impact of losing a critical server on that business and the financial markets. This is not an isolated example. Many organisation have identified that they need to do something around DR – but are unsure of where to turn, or what to do. This is a massive opportunity for you to provide a solution in partnership with Acronis. High end solutions such as IBM provide piece of mind but can you justify that expense to your customer and do they really need it.Could make a comparison to Car insurance or Holiday Insurance… do you need to pay top end prices? Most policies have all the cover you need, it is only the amount you are paying that differs. Why does an SMB need to pay more because it has an IBM stamp.
