Reliance Industries discovered natural gas reserves in the deep waters of the KG-D6 block in 2002, the largest gas discovery globally that year. They completed exploration and production in 6.5 years, faster than the global average of 8-10 years. This was India's first deepwater project, extracting gas from 2km below the seabed when the country had no prior experience with depths below 90m. Reliance also achieved discovery and development costs around 30% lower than typical global costs. The project helped meet India's growing gas demand and reduced imports.
