GNU – GNU’s Not Unix.
GNU is an Unix like operating
system which is free.
Kernel is like heart of an
operating system. Operating
systems “operates” on
hardware through kernel.
Linux is based on GNU. Thus
it is also called GNU/Linux.
Linux is free and open
source.
Linux logo – The Tux
Kernel alone is not sufficient to operate as full OS. We need file manager,
browser, desktop manager etc. That’s where distributions come into play.
Linux kernel is foundation. Other
applications runs on top of it.
Distributions, rather called Distros,
have the same Linux kernel, but
different application for everyday use.
Distros have different CLI interface,
shell, desktop manager, audio player,
server client, repositories etc.
One can download a distro from internet, burn
them on CDDVD and install it on pc.
 Many of us don’t know that Windows 7
Ultimate version originally costs nearly 300
US dollar per license. Where Linux is free as
are most distros.
 On the contrary Linux is free and open
source.
 One is free to copy and distribute the Linux
kernel and the free distros.
 On proprietary OS user give up all the rights
by accepting EULA. User can not share,
distribute or modify the system file.
 In Linux you have the rights. You can share,
distribute and mainly modify the system and
distribute the MODIFIED files on Linux.
 Unlike other OSs you can do whatever you
want with system files and directories in
Linux.
 Other OS’s hide their system files and how
they work. You can not modify them.
 In Linux there are no secrets. You can view
and modify any file of system you like. You
can even delete the root directories.
 Linux is customizable beyond imagination.
This is the reason there are so many
variations of Linux.
 Linux runs on the smallest and weakest
computers like watch, phones. Then it runs
on huge servers, on satellites, warehouse
scale computers. And last but not least, to
run super computers there is only one
option, LINUX!!!
 Linux is very powerful and reliable OS. It is
stable . Linux virus attacks are so rare typical
user won’t experience it.
 Linux supports numerous commands and it
has the most number of shells.
 The script language of Linux is vastly superior
to other OS scripts.
So when are you switching to LINUX?
