Leading Insurance Provider leveraging BI Implementation
1. Case Study
Business Intelligence (BI) Implementation for a
Leading Insurance Provider
The client, a leading insurance provider serving both corporate and individual accounts
across five countries, sought a partner to help realize their business intelligence
objectives: to have complete visibility of strategic KPIs and a consolidated view of the
business across geographies in order to make faster, more effective business decisions.
Background
The client is a leading insurance provider in the Gulf region with 52 million clients worldwide,
1,315 billion Euros in assets under management and 79 billion Euros in revenues. The client
provides both life and non-life insurance products to its personal and corporate customers in the
Gulf and KSA markets.
Business Challenges
In order to run its day-to-day operations, management needed complete visibility into business
parameters like gross written premiums, new business and renewals, agents’ earnings and sales
activities and operational efficiency in claims and policy servicing.
The key business challenges faced by the client included:
Disparate data sources within and across all geographical locations
An inconsistent view of premiums, outstanding claims, broker commissions and other
key measures
Manual planning, budgeting and predictive processes
A lack of multi-dimensional KPI analysis capability
Insufficient analyses of claims and premiums.

Technology Challenges
In addition to the various business challenges, the client faced a number of critical technology
challenges, including:
An application architecture that did not support ease of navigation, intuitiveness and
a simple ‘drag and drop’ interface
The lack of ad-hoc analysis facilities to support executive queries
The need to automate delivery of customized reports to a predefined email
distribution list
Manual report processes resulting in inaccuracies and reduced resource availability.

Results
The new system resulted in considerable time savings—reducing the client’s planning and
budgeting exercise from two weeks to a maximum of two days. Simultaneously, users gained
access to extensive and meaningful management information enabling them to plan strategically
and operate more effectively.
From a single interface, the end user is now able to access all reports as well as the dashboard.
Role-based security was implemented in such a way that the Country / Branch Managers can see
only their geographical data while top executives can see the complete picture.
In addition to these core benefits, the new system included various advanced features:
1. Cube Analysis through Excel 2007: End users can connect through Excel for in-depth data
analyses using a familiar Microsoft Office tool, as shown below.
2. Ad Hoc Reports: End users can create reports using the Report Builder tool by starting with
report layout templates containing pre-defined data regions to build combinations of tables,
matrices and charts. The Report Builder also makes it possible to:
Add text and formatting to reports
Create new fields and calculations
Preview, print and publish reports
Explore data related to the content of the report.
4. 3. Dashboards: Dashboards provide an overview of key metrics and key information all in
one screen. Using the Dashboard filters, users can select a range of information to view.
There are a variety of dashboard capabilities, as shown below:
Parameterized Dashboard Graphs
Drill Down and Drill Up Feature
Graphs and Tabular Reports with Expand and Collapse Functionality
Generation of Custom Graphs and Reports.
