Road Infrastructure Safety Management,[object Object],The principle on which RISM is based is to provide ,[object Object],"self-explaining roads and ,[object Object],a forgiving road environment",[object Object],8,[object Object]
A self-explaining road ....,[object Object],Giving drivers good information about the road ahead makes the driving task easier, ,[object Object],enables drivers to make better choices and ,[object Object],reduces the risk of an accident.  ,[object Object],This is the essence of a self-explaining road.  ,[object Object],9,[object Object]
.... and a forgiving road environment.  ,[object Object],A forgiving road environment is about ,[object Object],constructing flatter batters and side slopes, covering drains, marking hazards which cannot be removed, providing safety barriers where there are steep slopes, etc., ,[object Object],so that if a vehicle leaves the road or its lane, ,[object Object],the risk of a serious or fatal accident is reduced.  ,[object Object],10,[object Object]
