4. Step 1…The “Sample Images” Gallery This is the Home page of Image Terrain and the page you will arrive at when you subscribe to an account. Notice near the top left, the number of “Design Collections” available for you to create and and view in your account. In this example there are 500 available. You can refer to the “How to Begin” or “Tutorial” documents on the left side of the screen for detailed directions. Check out our You tube introductory video. Let’s begin: Mouse over the “Image Terrain” tab at the top and click on “Sample Images”

5. Step 2…Selecting an image This is the “Sample Images” gallery. It is included with your Image Terrain account. There are about 150 images available for reference only so you can explore how the Image Terrain process affects and creates new designs. All account holders have access to this gallery so we recommend you use it for practice only. Whether you are using images from this gallery or the ‘ “Source Image Gallery” where you upload your own images, you will follow this same process. Click on the green icon to the bottom right of any of the thumbnails to put your image through the process. Let’s start with the image in the bottom row all the way on the left, called “Geo: Bart”

6. Step 3…Choosing an “Extraction Overlay” You have now arrived at the “Pattern Generator” page. There are two grid extraction overlay methods available. Select the “Auto Extraction Grid Overlay”. for now. This will allow you to select a preset grid to overlay above your image. The “Manual Extraction Overlay” option allows you to create a custom selection area. We will try this later. Now click “Continue”.

7. Step 4…Selecting from 8 grid options… This is the “Grid Extraction” page. Image Terrain allows you to select the entire area of a reference image or just a portion of it and apply the process. As you can see, there are 8 grids to select from. Let’s choose the 3x3 “Grid Overlay” which allows you to choose from 13 defined areas of the image. If you chose grid 8 you would have 113 areas to select from and apply the process. Click “Continue”. Try experimenting with the other grid options as well. The smaller the grid extraction area the more spacious the design layout. It’s all about “Scale”.

8. Step 5…Choosing a grid extraction area… On this grid selection page you will choose a specific area of your image to process. Image Terrain allows you to select perfect square areas as in the first option or diagonally rotated squares in option 2 & 3 for a total of 13 areas to choose from. Let’s choose the “3 x 3 Grid Overlay”. A grid overlay will now display above your image. Choose white or black to provide the most contrast. Now position your mouse over one of the 9 square areas of the grid above the large thumbnail that you would like to process and click on it. Let’s choose the bottom left square for this example.

9. Step 6…Select a design category to view… You are now ready to select one of the six design categories to the right of the large thumbnail and view the new design galleries that will display. Notice the history of thumbnails at the top. It displays the original design you started with, the grid you selected, the area of the grid you chose to process and a thumbnail of that area. Let’s try “Primary Patterns” and see what interesting designs display.. It will take about 18 – 30 seconds for all 80 original images and new designs to display.

10. Step 7…Viewing the “Primary Patterns” category Eighty design elements, motifs and repeating patterns display instantly. Mouse over any of the thumbnails and a larger thumbnail will display. Scroll down to view all 80 design options. Notice on the left side of the screen near the top that one of your “Design Collections” has expired and you now have 499 instead of 500 If you want to experiment more, go back up to “Extraction Area” thumbnail and select a different portion of your design and review eighty new options.

11. Step 8…Working with the selected image… If you click on any one of the small gallery thumbnails a much larger thumbnail will display and the background will shade to gray. The name and size of your image is displayed below the thumbnail. You can now: 1- Download a low res file 2- Add this image to your shopping cart or… 3- “Copy it to yourImage Warehouse”. The “Image Warehouse” is a transient location where you can store the designs you like before you place them in a gallery. You will see this soon. Let’s click on “Add to Shopping Cart” as well as “Copy to Image Warehouse” in two separate steps. Now exit from the large thumbnail thereby returning to the “Primary Patterns” page.

12. Step 9…Working with your selected image… Notice, there is a green outline around the image you just selected. This confirms that you saved it to the “Image Warehouse”. Also notice the “View Cart” (1) link on the left side of the screen. This confirms that you added 1 image to your shopping cart. You can continue reviewing images on this page and add more images to your ”image Warehouse” or to your shopping cart.

13. Step 10…Saving a working session… At any point in this process you can save the page that you are working on by placing your mouse over “Work in Progress” at the top of the page and clicking on “Save Session”. Then when you are ready to go back to this page click on “Restore Session”.

14. Step 11…Using the “Manual Extraction Overlay”…… Let’s take a few steps back with a different thumbnail image… To create a custom area to process your image, click on the “Manual Extraction Overlay” and then “Continue”.

15. Step 12…Using the “Manual Extraction Overlay” (2)…… To select a custom area, place your cursor on top of the large thumbnail image, click and drag it to the upper or lower right until a box displays. You can make the box smaller or larger by dragging the corner handles of the box in and out. To move the box around simply place your mouse on the inside of the box and drag or slide it to a position of your choice. Then click “Continue”.

16. Step 13…Using the “Manual Extraction Overlay” (3)…… You have now arrived at the page with the design categories. Follow the same steps as with the “Manual Extraction Overlay” tool. Choose a category and view the gallery of designs.

17. Step 14…How to upload your own image file… There are two ways to upload an image to your “Source Image Gallery” The 1st is to go to “Image Playground” and click on “Work Station”. You are now in the “Source Image Gallery” of your ”Work Station”. Click on “Upload New Image” to browse through your files as in the next step. You can also create a gallery and upload an image to the “Source Image Gallery” simultaneously. See step 18

18. Step 15…Browsing your files… Click on “Browse” and select an image from your files. Be sure to comply with the size restrictions and remember to begin with a high resolution jpeg file if you want good results. Name your gallery, your image file and give it a description. We will use the “Building 1” file. Also, begin with a color grouped image or design if you want your new designs to be color grouped. The quality of the image you begin with will dictate the quality of your resulting design created using Image Terrain.

19. Step 16…Source Image Gallery… Your “Source Image Gallery” Is where you store your own reference images. Your Image is now in your “Source Image gallery” and ready to work. Click on the “R” if you want to rename it and the “D” if you want to delete it. To develop designs and design collections using your image simply follow the same steps we used with an image from the “Sample Images Gallery”. Begin by clicking on the small green icon to the bottom right of the image.

20. Step 17…Create a New Gallery… To ”Create a New Gallery” just go to “Image Playground” at the top and scroll down to “Create New Gallery” or click on the “Create New Gallery” tab towards the top of any page. Step 1. Click on “Browse” to review images in your computer. You are in the “Create a Gallery using new image” link. Step 2. Choose an image Step 3. Give it a name and description Step 4. Click on ”Copy to Source Image Gallery” if you would like to place it in your “Source Image Gallery” simultaneously. This is always a good idea! Step 5. Click on “Create”. You have now created a new gallery in your “My Image Gallery” area and placed it in your “Source Image Gallery” simultaneously. If you have already stored images in your “Source Image Gallery” and would like to create a gallery using one of them, click on “Create a Gallery using source image” and follow the same steps but do not click on “Copy to Source Image Gallery”.

21. Step 18…Upload an image to a New Gallery… Let’s select the “Cane orig.” image from our computer, give it a name and a description, click on “Copy to Source Image Gallery” and “Create”. Now it will display as a new gallery and as an image ready to work with in your “Source Image Gallery”. Let’s take a look.

22. Step 19…Review your “Image Warehouse”… Go to your ‘My Image Galleries” tab and view the “Cane” image gallery you have just created. Your image displays as a “Primary Gallery”. Click on ‘My Image Warehouse” to open it and review all the images you have stored there. You can now transfer them from your warehouse to any one of your galleries. But first…Click on the “Cane 1 Primary Gallery” thumbnail image to open up the gallery.

23. Step 20…Transferring an image from your “Image Warehouse” to a gallery… Your “Cane 1” gallery is now open. It is empty until you transfer images into it. Now click on the “My Image Warehouse” tab. When you mouse over a small thumbnail image in the Warehouse a slightly larger one will display. To transfer an image click on any one of the thumbnails and drag it toward the open gallery until a grey highlighted area displays, then drop it in. You can place up to 40 images into a gallery.

24. Step 21…Viewing the image tabs in your gallery… When you click on an image in the “My Image Warehouse” or in one of your galleries it displays a much larger view. You can now: 1- Rename the image 2- Delete the image 3- Download or send a low res. image 4- Create a gallery 5- Create a Sub Gallery 6- Add it to your shopping cart or.. 7- Add it to your Image Warehouse

25. Step 22…Review your Shopping Cart (1)… Let’s review the image we added to the Shopping Cart in ‘step 8’ by clicking on “View Cart” (1). You can decide to “Delete” the image or “Purchase” it. Let’s click on “Purchase”. Your account includes a specific number of downloadable images. Each time you click “Purchase” your account expires images from the balance available and displays one less for each image you have purchased. Notice “Total Credit Left”. Below it indicates how many more images you can download to your desktop.

26. Step 23…Review your Shopping Cart (2)… After you click on “Purchase” this page displays. It will take 3 to 10 minutes before your image is ready. Go have a cup of coffee or go back to your working space by going to “Work in Progress” and clicking on “Restore Session”. When you know your image is ready click on “Purchased Images” to the left of the screen.

27. Step 24…Retrieving your purchased image… After you click on “Purchased Images” your most recent order will display. Check on “Status” to confirm it’s “Ready”. If it is, click on the “Order Number”.

28. Step 25…Downloading your purchased image… Your image is ready to be down loaded. Just click on “Download”. Notice the size of your image. It is 4.00” x 4.00”. This declared size always refers to a high resolution 300 dpi file. When it downloads to the application of your choice it will open as a 72 dpi file, 4 times the size or in this case 16.00 x 16.00”. This allows you to resize it to any resolution you prefer for the project you are working on.

29. Tips, Tricks and suggestions…. Use Firefox version 3.6 or above, Google Chrome or a current version of Safari for best internet viewing services. 2- Review size parameters when preparing to upload an image. Begin with a high resolution image if you want a good result. 4. If you are a textile designer and you want a color reduced image, begin with a high res. color reduced image or design when you begin the process , other wise you will need to color group your pattern in another application afterward. If it seems like you are waiting a long time for a category of designs to display go back up to the top of the page and click on the link, “Patterns”. This will bring you back to the category page. Then click on the category again. The smaller the selection area you use the more open the layout and design results.
