The Internet of Things Universe
If we had computers that knew everything there was to know about things—using data they
gathered without any help from us—we would be able to track and count everything, and
greatly reduce waste, loss and cost. We would know when things needed replacing, repairing or
recalling, and whether they were fresh or past their best. The Internet of Things has the
potential to change the world, just as the Internet did. Maybe even more so.

In 1995, there was 16 million devices connected on the Internet, and
nearly all the data on the Internet was captured and created by typing,
pressing a record button, taking a digital picture or scanning a bar code,
leaving out the most numerous and important routers of all – people.

By 2020, 50 billion devices will be connected, including 3 billion
subscribers buying information to enhance their lifestyles. In mature
markets, each of these customers will have 5-10 things connected. By
2020 a cumulative 100 billion processors will have shipped.

The Internet of Things Universe If we had computers that knew everything there was to know about things—using data they gathered without any help from us—we would be able to track and count everything, and greatly reduce waste, loss and cost. In mature markets, each of these customers will have 5-10 things connected. Wireless Communications will unlock much of the IoT’s economic potential by enabling the data flow. 2010 2015 In 2013, businesses realized only 53% of the IoT profit opportunity. Wide area Deployment will be enabled by advances in miniaturization both in hardware and software. Small Wireless Sensors capable of transmitting raw data, and higher functions, will enable IoT. 2020 In 2020, additional expenditures for IoT will be twice the US GDP for 2013.
