- Welcome, My name is Jim McShane and I am the Executive Director of the South Shore GRANTS Center in Whiting Indiana. I am supported by a donor designated fund and the Lake Area United Way. My partners are Calumet College of St. Joseph and Indiana University Northwest. I contract with a cadre of independent grant writers to encourage and write grants for nonprofits and local governments. We are endorsed by the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission. Today I will be speaking on the Nonprofit Boards and what will be required of governance in the future. I have more than thirty five years experience on nonprofit boards from hospital board to Boy Scouts Council board. It is my goal in the next 45 minutes to share some of the good, the bad and the ugly and to suggest that as we progress in the nonprofit world, much more attention to training board members and senior staff is needed if we want to have successful and competent services in our community.
