1) In early times, buildings had great fuel consumption but low comfort, while today's buildings have no energy use but much higher comfort. 2) Passive houses in Germany use little energy but provide high comfort through good insulation of walls, roofs, floors, and use of efficient windows, ventilation systems, and insulation techniques. 3) Passive house design principles can be applied to new construction or renovation of existing buildings, as demonstrated by examples in Gutach, Freiburg, and a renovation project.
