Tips on Migrating Ecommerce Platform

Tip 1 – Domain

• Domain Ownership (WHOIS)
• DNS Settings
• Start Process early
Tip 2 – Process

Impact on Current Process
• Shipping Vendors
• Accounting Systems
• Payment Processors
• Confirm new place offers Reports & Systems.
• Compatible with 3rd party vendors
Tip 3 – SSL

SSL ( Secured Socket Layer)
• Must move to new server
• If shared make sure new provider accepts it 
• Not all certificates are compatible with all web 
server software
• Make sure current certificate will work
• Don’t Leave till the last minute
Tip 4 – Data

Moving Data 
• Site Migration can be midly challenging to ardous
• Check how easy it is to import data 
• New Platform should explain its Database 
Structure and what imports it accepts 
• Moving Product data should be straight forward
• Order data can be more complex
Tip 5 – SEO
Avoid SEO Glitches
• If you are getting major revenue from organic 
traffic this should be a HUGE Priority 
• Make sure you have the ability to name your own 
link structure to match previous links
• If link renaming is not possible 301 Permanent is 
your only option. 
• Check and Make sure either of these options are 
available 
Tip 6 – Email

Keep Email Flowing
• Email is critical during move
• Have a way to check email in old server 
• Temporary forward 48 hours to new server
• Review accounts and aliases
• Test every new email and form before going live
Tip 7 – “Live” Date

Determine Live Data
• At least 48 hours before move schedule DNS 
update within 300 seconds. 
Tip 8 – Test First

Test First
• Run some Test Orders before making site live
Tip 9 – Schedule

Schedule Transfer
• Recommend doing very early 1 AM
• If you schedule TTL then it should be instant
• ALERTS CUSTMOMERS THE WEEK BEFORE
Tip 10 – Backup

Keep old site for at least a month
• Give your Self Time to Archive old files, Scripts, and 
other vital information

  • 2. Tip 1 – Domain • Domain Ownership (WHOIS) • DNS Settings • Start Process early
  • 3. Tip 2 – Process Impact on Current Process • Shipping Vendors • Accounting Systems • Payment Processors • Confirm new place offers Reports & Systems. • Compatible with 3rd party vendors
  • 4. Tip 3 – SSL SSL ( Secured Socket Layer) • Must move to new server • If shared make sure new provider accepts it  • Not all certificates are compatible with all web  server software • Make sure current certificate will work • Don’t Leave till the last minute
  • 5. Tip 4 – Data Moving Data  • Site Migration can be midly challenging to ardous • Check how easy it is to import data  • New Platform should explain its Database  Structure and what imports it accepts  • Moving Product data should be straight forward • Order data can be more complex
  • 6. Tip 5 – SEO Avoid SEO Glitches • If you are getting major revenue from organic  traffic this should be a HUGE Priority  • Make sure you have the ability to name your own  link structure to match previous links • If link renaming is not possible 301 Permanent is  your only option.  • Check and Make sure either of these options are  available 
  • 7. Tip 6 – Email Keep Email Flowing • Email is critical during move • Have a way to check email in old server  • Temporary forward 48 hours to new server • Review accounts and aliases • Test every new email and form before going live
  • 8. Tip 7 – “Live” Date Determine Live Data • At least 48 hours before move schedule DNS  update within 300 seconds. 
  • 9. Tip 8 – Test First Test First • Run some Test Orders before making site live
  • 10. Tip 9 – Schedule Schedule Transfer • Recommend doing very early 1 AM • If you schedule TTL then it should be instant • ALERTS CUSTMOMERS THE WEEK BEFORE
  • 11. Tip 10 – Backup Keep old site for at least a month • Give your Self Time to Archive old files, Scripts, and  other vital information
  • 12.
