I select a “manual” program, choose a brisk
walking speed – about 6Km/h, and – here’s the
magic – I set the thing to absolutely the steepest
angle it will go to. That’s typically 15 degrees.
Doesn’t sound like much but that’s about the
same as walking up a one-in-six hill, which is
quite steep.
But what if you already have a gym membership, and want to make the best of it?
Or maybe you like the social aspect that comes along with it?

I’ll explore this primal sing of the gym in future posts, but for now, here’s
something that could make a massive impact on your training. I attribute it to my
success in getting my body fat percentage to it’s lowest level in many a year.
The treadmill. Its very name sounds like an instrument of torture, and in every
gym, up and down the country, there’s usually a row of them whirring away as
people pound away on them. I was one of those.
When Wales were in the Rugby World cup, I was in my “chronic cardio” era (no
coincidence that I was 25Kg heavier then) and I decided to watch an entire match,
including all the preamble, in one marathon two hour treadmill session. And so I
did, I plodded away and did just short of a half marathon, while going nowhere.
At the end, my body ached, and after the endorphin rush had passed, I struggled
to stay awake at my desk for the rest of the day.
Let’s take a step back for a moment. What are we trying to achieve with our
training? We want to get stronger, leaner, maybe more muscular. Those are all
what is called “adaptations”. It’s what happens when something we do triggers a
change in the way certain genes express themselves.
Now here’s the interesting thing. These adaptations are not triggered by
“chronic” activity. They are only triggered by “peak” activity, which is to say,
you need intensity, rather than time.
Which is why I was just another fat guy plodding away on a treadmill.
But, with a little tweak to your routine, you can make the treadmill work
massively in your favor, and I think you’ll even enjoy using it, rather than feel
it’s something you “have” to do.

Here’s what I have been doing lately with excellent results. I set the length of the
workout to, say, thirty minutes, if I am planning on being in the gym for a total
of one hour.
My story is not an uncommon one. I’m in my mid-forties, and for most of my
adult life I was overweight. Not morbidly obese, but always a couple of stone
heavier that I would like to be.
Just over a year ago, I discovered the website of Professor Arthur DeVany, and
from there, I discovered the Paleo/Primal/Ancestral “movement”. I don’t really
know *what* you call it, but it generally goes by the name of “Paleo”.
I am an avid reader of books on the subject, and I subscribe to many, many blogs,
and I watch a lot of YouTube clips to learn more about different exercises, and
better technique.
After having lost three stone (44lbs, 20Kg) and kept it off for over a year – and
loving every minute of it, I decided that I would write a book. There’s not really
a shortage of books in the Paleo “space”, but I felt that none of the ones I had
read provided everything that I would have liked to have known at the outset.
So that’s the book I wrote – the book I wished that I could have read all those
months ago.
I also wanted to pull together all of my resources into a blog, so that you can
have more breadth and depth in the subject material, and also to provide an
oportunity for you to ask any questions that you might have. So fire away!

I select a “manual” program, choose a brisk walking speed – about 6Km/h, and – here’s the magic – I set the thing to absolutely the steepest angle it will go to. That’s typically 15 degrees. Doesn’t sound like much but that’s about the same as walking up a one-in-six hill, which is quite steep. But what if you already have a gym membership, and want to make the best of it? I attribute it to my success in getting my body fat percentage to it’s lowest level in many a year. The treadmill. Its very name sounds like an instrument of torture, and in every gym, up and down the country, there’s usually a row of them whirring away as people pound away on them. I was one of those.

When Wales were in the Rugby World cup, I was in my “chronic cardio” era (no coincidence that I was 25Kg heavier then) and I decided to watch an entire match, including all the preamble, in one marathon two hour treadmill session. And so I did, I plodded away and did just short of a half marathon, while going nowhere. At the end, my body ached, and after the endorphin rush had passed, I struggled to stay awake at my desk for the rest of the day. Let’s take a step back for a moment. What are we trying to achieve with our training? We want to get stronger, leaner, maybe more muscular. Those are all what is called “adaptations”. It’s what happens when something we do triggers a change in the way certain genes express themselves. Now here’s the interesting thing. These adaptations are not triggered by “chronic” activity. They are only triggered by “peak” activity, which is to say, you need intensity, rather than time. Which is why I was just another fat guy plodding away on a treadmill. But, with a little tweak to your routine, you can make the treadmill work massively in your favor, and I think you’ll even enjoy using it, rather than feel it’s something you “have” to do.  Walking. We’re going to walk on the treadmill! Here’s what I have been doing lately with excellent results. I set the length of the workout to, say, thirty minutes, if I am planning on being in the gym for a total of one hour.
  • 5. My story is not an uncommon one. I’m in my mid-forties, and for most of my adult life I was overweight. Not morbidly obese, but always a couple of stone heavier that I would like to be.
