2. Maya Angelou is known for her 1969
memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,
which made literary history as the first
nonfiction best seller by an African
American woman. In 1971, Angelou
published the Pulitzer Prize nominated
poetry collection Just Give Me a Cool Drink
of Water ‘Fore I Die. She later wrote the
poem “On the Pulse of Morning”one of
her most famous works which she recited
at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration in
1993. Angelou received several honors
throughout her career, including two
NAACP Image Awards in the outstanding
literary work (nonfiction) category, in 2005
and 2009. She died on May 28, 2014.
When I was three Bailey four, we
had arrived in the musty little town,
wearing tags on our wrists which
instructed “To Whom It May Concern”
that we were Marguerite and Bailey
Johnson Jr., from Long Beach,
California, en route to Stamps, Arkansas,
c/o Mrs. Annie Henderson.
Years later I discovered that the United
Stateshadbeencrossedthousandsof times
by frightened Black children traveling
alone to their newly affluent parents in
Northern cities, or back to grandmothers
in Southern towns when the urban
North reneged on its economic promises.
Thetownreactedtousasitsinhabitantshad
reacted to all things new before our coming.
It regarded us a while without curiosity but
with caution, and after we were seen to be
harmless (and children) it closed in around
us, as a real mother embraces a stranger’s
child. Warmly, but not too familiarly.
We lived with our grandmother and uncle
in the rear of the Store (it was always
spoken of with a capital s), which she
had owned some twenty-five years.
Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and
memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird
Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult
of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world
right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American
classic beloved worldwide.

“I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS liberates the
reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her
own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.”
JamesBaldwin
Maya Angelou’s autobiography was the first book I ever
read that made me feel my life as a colored girl growing
up in Mississippi deserved validation. I loved it from
the opening lines.

Redesign Book Cover Jacket
Design a bookcover jacket that includes the front cover, the spine with the
logo and publisher, the back cover that includes the text by the publisher,
ISBN#, and the barcode. Front and back flaps describe the book and
include a photograph and biography of the author. InDesign and Illustrator
were used to create this bookcover.
3. Self-Portrait
Using a photograph, the
pen tools and swatches
panel, I created my self
portrait. This was a self
taught project and I learned
from watching tutorials
that I found on the internet.
My portrait was created in
Illustrator and published in
the 2014 Edition of SPARK
Magazine.
4. Newsletter Design for the Wildlife
Conservation Society
Design and print a four page newsletter as
a mailer for the Wildlife Conservation that
included the use of two colors and US postal
guidelines. Only a maximum of six high
resolution images were allowed. Four of the
photos came from my own photography.
The Purple Flower, The Elk Refuge, Big Horn
Sheep and The Leaf with Raindrops.

The Culture Germans have made huge contributions to classical music, with famous German
or Austrian composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig von
Beethoven to name just a few. Germans are also known for their precision and engineering and have
strong traditions in printmaking by woodcut and engraving. You will find many phases of architecture
such as Romanesque, Gothic, Classicist, Baroque, Rococo and Renaissance in cathedrals, castles and public
buildings throughout Germany’s beautiful country side and thriving cities.
Brochure Design
Design a double gate fold travel brochure for
a desireable destination. Heavy research was
required on the subject as well as research
for using proper mechanics for creating the
design format used. I chose Germany because
I’ve traveled there in the past to visit relatives
and it’s where I hope to take my family in the
near future. Germany is beautiful with so
many places to see and things to do. From
seeing the castles, visiting a beer house, to
hiking, skiing, climbing and the art culture is
huge. The images came from various websites.
I wanted to show as many photos as possible
and list the many things you can do there. I
used InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop for
this project.
6. Four Page Magazine Spread
Design multiple pages for a travel magazine
that shows my page layout skills as well as my
photography skills. I wrote the captions that
describe the images in more detail rather than
using greek body copy. These spreads show
my own photography from Acadia National
Park, located on Mt. Desert Island in Maine.
An incredible travel destination here in New
England. The programs I used were InDesign
and Photoshop.
7. Four Page Magazine Spread
Design multiple pages for a travel magazine
that shows my page layout skills as well as
my photography skills. I wrote the captions
that describe the images in more detail rather
than using greek body copy. These spreads
show my own photography from Jackson
Hole, Wyoming and Whistler/Blackcomb in
British Columbia, Canada. Two incredible
travel destinations. The programs I used were
InDesign and Photoshop.
8. Photography
Hereyou’llfindasmall collection
of photographs that include a
variety of subjects. The main
focus was to use the camera to
get wonderful results without
using a flash. Some categories
shown here include motion,
night, closeups, portrait and
still photography. To see more

9. Magazine Cover
Design a sci-fi magazine cover for the
501st
Mercs. Yes, they are a real group of
men and women that love the StarWars
movies but what you probably don’t know
is that they do a lot of community service.
They are asked to appear at major baseball
games, appear in parades, and events to
help raise awareness and money for kids
who are struggling with severe illnesses.
The photo is of Colby Thompson and the
cover design was created using InDesign
and Photoshop.

11. Prospective Grid
Designed and created the clock tower
in London using the Perspective Grid in
Illustrator. The pen tool was used for each
and every detail you see on the tower.
When finished with Big Ben I decided to
create more of the cities background and
by doing so created a travel poster for
London. This design was published in the
2014 edition of SPARK Magazine.

iPhone 4 Mobile App
Mobile App Design
Design a mobile applicaton for
the iPhone. I had an idea to
create a tracking app for skiers
and snowboarders. This app can
be very useful and is designed
for the skier who takes a nasty
fall and their skis become hard to
find, or when you go in for lunch
and you want to keep track of your
expensive equipment that must be
left outside. I used Illustrator and
Photoshop to design the app and
then Prezi and Powerpoint for the
presentations.
13. Album Design
I have been designing albums
for professional photographers
for the past 10 years. This
involves creating custom page
layouts using a unique software
program designed by Lab Prints.
This software is similar to the
InDesign program allowing me to
customize each and every album.
14. Web Design
heiditotman.com
Here I designed a website for myself
to showcase my work, photography
and graphic design skills. I also
included a short summary about
myself and have a contact page for
prospective clients that wish to get
in touch with me. I kept the layout
clean and simple with user friendly
navigation. I used Dreamweaver to
design my website, Illustrator for the
logo, and Bridge and Photoshop to
display all my work properly.
