It belongs exclusively to the godly.Solomon showed godly wisdom when he was faced with a baby-ownership crisis and Jesus shamed the Pharisees with heavenly wisdom in their questions about authority and tax.God offers this heavenly wisdom in abundance to all believers so that we can live truly successful lives and make an impact for God in this world.

- Two kinds of wisdomThe Bible refers to earthly wisdom and wisdom from above. The Apostle James referred to it as follows: ‘But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.’James 3:14-18 (NIV)
- Earthly, unspiritual, demonic wisdom has the following traits and bears the fruit of disorder and evil practice: bitternessenvy or jealousyselfish ambition, andhypocrisy.
- In contrast to this, wisdom from above is:purepeace-lovingconsideratesubmissivefull of mercyfull of good fruitimpartial (does not take sides or show favouritism), andsincere. Godly wisdom is not found in books, but in God as a person. It is personified in Jesus. He is wisdom and has become wisdom for us (1 Corinthians 1:30).We express godly wisdom most sustainably in a daily relationship with the Holy Spirit who is aptly called the Spirit of Wisdom.
- 2. Wisdom and humility
- Humility is the birthplace of godly wisdom. This wisdom does not operate within the confines of the rational mind and thus will not always make sense. It requires humble faith in God and His ability. To carry on making our own decisions without submitting to God for His guidance, is a form of arrogance and results in a lack of wisdom from above.Let’s enrol in heaven’s wisdom classes by showing willingness to learn and to be corrected. Loosely translated this means to be humble!

Living in godly wisdomTo live in godly wisdom is not a matter of philosophy but of practical wisdom.God’s wisdom is surprisingly practical and can be defined as knowing which way to go; what to do next; when to do it; how to do it and with whom. It is wisdom of the heart expressed by the hands.To be equipped with such wisdom, we need to walk with the Holy Spirit. Heavenly wisdom can come in the form of a gift of the Spirit (word of wisdom) but is occasional or situational (1 Corinthians 12:8).Godly wisdom is a combination of intelligence, experienceandgoodness. I believe goodness includes integrity and, as some authors say, even humour and a lightness of touch. Dictators and authoritarian or heavy-handed people are not often accredited with displaying heavenly wisdom.It is often very simple in its expression and closely akin to common sense. Welcome the Wisdom Family – Understanding (seek to understand), Knowledge, Discernment and Common Sense. When you welcome these and spend time with them you will become wise.Let’s develop anappetite and love for wisdom. ‘Happy is the man who finds wisdom,And the man who gains understanding;For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver,And her gain than fine gold.She is more precious than rubies,And all the things you may desire cannot compare with her.Length of days is in her right hand,In her left hand riches and honor.’Proverbs 3:13-16 (NKJV) Wisdom is something we can grow in. Nobody is born wise, but everybody can become wise by receiving the wisdom God offers. In the light of this, it is sad that so many people still die as fools. There is a clear link between godly wisdom and skill, which results in success (Ecclesiastes 10:10).We grow in wisdom as Jesus did when we pursue the will of God.
- 4. The effect of godly wisdomGodly wisdom cannot be hidden, it always becomes visible.
- It shows itself and shines like a lighthouse. ‘Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.’ (Emphasis added) James 3:13 (NIV) A good life and deeds done in humility shine with godly wisdom. It is expressed in discernment and wise choices.Bitter envy and selfish ambition are enemies that challenge godly wisdom (James 3:14). Let’s make these our enemies too!
- Wisdom from God has the following effects: It changes circumstances, hearts and worlds.It saves lives.It simplifies, reducing things to the essential.It refreshes and gives life.It creates wealth (Proverbs 3:13-16).It carries a powerful testimony andis a weapon for spiritual warfare (Ephesians 3:10). Application:Do you need wisdom from above? God’s Word invites you to ask for it and also promises that you will receive it!Are you skilled in applying wisdom from God in your daily life, family, relationships and career?
