The Road Ahead In the 1996 edition of The Road Ahead, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Bill Gates laid out his vision of an interconnected world built around the Internet. Based on the premise that life will be transformed by the convergence of inexpensive computing and inexpensive communications, Gates drew from his experience at the center of the personal computer revolution to give insights on the growth, evolution and impact of technology. Inside Out To commemorate Microsoft's 25th anniversary, the company published Inside Out, a book written by and for employees which highlights the products, people and culture that transformed Bill Gates' and Paul Allen's vision for personal computing into reality. Each chapter of the book features an introductory essay by Bill Gates, reflecting on the company's history and looking ahead to future opportunities. Business @ the Speed of Thought Business @ the Speed of Thought was written to inspire you to demand - and get - more from technology, enabling you and your company to respond faster to your customers, adapt to changing business demands, and prosper in the digital economy. Business @ the Speed of Thought is not a technical book. It shows how business and technology are now inextricably linked. Each chapter is structured around a business or management issue, showing how digital processes can dramatically improve your results. In 1999, Gates wrote Business @ the Speed of Thought, a book that shows how computer technology can solve business problems in fundamentally new ways. The book was published in 25 languages and is available in more than 60 countries. Business @ the Speed of Thought has received wide critical acclaim, and was listed on the best-seller lists of the New York Times, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and Amazon.com. Gates' previous book, The Road Ahead, published in 1995, held the No. 1 spot on the New York Times' bestseller list for seven weeks. Gates has donated the proceeds of both books to non-profit organizations that support the use of technology in education and skills development. In addition to his love of computers and software, Gates founded Corbis, which is developing one of the world's largest resources of visual information - a comprehensive digital archive of art and photography from public and private collections around the globe. He is also a member of the board of directors of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., which invests in companies engaged in diverse business activities.
Evangelic bad boy who, with Steve Wozniak, co-founded Apple Computer Corporation and became a multimillionaire before the age of 30.
Jobs at 1 st dismissed Bills offer of BASIC to Apple, by saying that we can create their own version of BASIC in weekend. At end he did licensed BASIC to be used for Apple. But simultaneously worked on his dream of GUI based Operating system.
Considered as anti gates, for gates consolidator for industry standards, while Steve goes for revolution through innovation. Different from Bill, Allen, and Wasniak He was the person selling idea of PC to general masses, the public.
Macintosh operating system using Graphical User Interface was introduced to world Along with Mouse, Mouse Pointer and on screen icons. Jobs forced people to choose between MS-IBM and MAC-Apple. Jobs was the visionary who changed computer world and apple overtook MS in market share.
Steve was overconfident & did not see Bill & MS as serious threat to Apple. Soon after the release of MAC, Jobs asked MS to develop s/w for MAC OS. Gates obliged & proceeded to copy MAC & launch better version of MAC, Windows. This cocky attitude of Jobs and lack of management skill became threat to Apple. Criticized for his relationships with his employees & co-workers. Due to difference in thinking he left apple
John Scully ( CEO of PepsiCo.) replaced Steve as CEO of Apple, Apple fell from grace and became a niche market player, i.e. its market share was very small compared to other companies. Steve founded small computer manufacturing company. Pixar, an animation company that went on to produce Toy Story & A bugs life.
To revive the apple as market share was failing, no new s/w development & outdated OS. Developed simple, stylish & internet friendly computer. Similarly to yesteryears MAC-GUI innovations, that caught fancy of people. Matured and looks to professional staff for ideas and advice. Owns only 1 share of Apple stock but works his heart out. As said by Oracle CEO & apples board member- Larry Ellison.
