Working with Tabs
Tabs give the user the ability to have
multiple websites open at the same
time in one browser window.
Each website loads and resides
independently in a separate tab
window for access at any time by
clicking on the tab.
Working with Tabs
Using Tabs makes for efficient surfing.
Tabs in Other Browsers
Tabs look and function in a similar
manner in other Browsers.
Favorites
This is a great way to keep track of
websites that are visited frequently.
There is a Favorites button and a
Favorites Bar; both can be modified.
Saving Favorites
Click on the Favorites button to access,
save and manage all Favorites, Feeds
and History.

websites for quick, easy access.

Bing™.
Google is the search
engine giant that is used

Bing is the latest

in June 2009. Bing’s
market share is still very
small but has been
growing quickly.

Query Suggestions start to appear.
Search Results
Advanced Searches
Google has an Advanced Search to
help produce better results. Words,
phrases and other options can be
added to the search while specific
words can also be excluded.

you can unlock many powerful
search functions and get more
precise search results.

We will also manage security settings inside Browsers and learn different techniques to make more effective Internet Searches. *Instructor notes will be distinguished by italics. Make sure the following are installed /updated: Internet Explorer Other requirements: Internet Connection (High Speed preferred)
  2. *We will be using Internet Explorer for the workshop but having Firefox® , Chrome™ and Safari installed for reference is a good idea. For this Workshop will be looking at many interesting features in Internet Explorer ® but will also touch on Firefox® , Chrome and Safari . Web Browsers are software that display data and code in a graphical fashion and have come a long way from the early 1990s. Most browsers have developed to the point where many similar if not the same features are available across the board as the constantly evolving Internet forces Browser companies to continuously adapt their products to stay current with trends in code, new technologies, security and usability. All five browsers mentioned in this workshop have been in fierce competition with one another, in some cases for many years, helping to push innovations in many different areas of web browser functionality in order to acquire more users. It is a very good idea to check periodically for updates for any browsers installed on your computer. Most browsers will prompt the user when an update is available. Updates for browsers are frequent as they add new features, keep current with code compatibility, fix bugs and update security features. If a browser is more than a couple years old, more advanced websites may not display properly or at all. This is because older browsers may not be able to read and interpret the underlying code of a newer website. Many people have probably been to a website that gives a list of browsers and version numbers that are compatible for that specific site. *It is a good idea to have more than one browser installed on a computer. Some sites might not be compatible with a certain browser and/or may function slightly different in different browsers.
  3. The history of Internet Explorer dates back to 1995 and still holds over half of all market share usage for all browsers. Part of the reason for this high number is that Internet Explorer has been shipped with all Windows® Computers as the default web browser for many years. 5. Google ’s Chrome browser is a newer browser that went public in late 2008. Chrome’s name is derived from the look and feel/Graphical Interface of the browser. The Browser is meant to look very minimal and was designed for efficiency and speed. The Address bar was merged with the Search box, enabling the user to type in a web address or type in words for a search all in the same location. Themes are also available to customize the look of the browser similar to Personas in Firefox® . 8. It is recommended that if you are an Internet Explorer user, make sure to upgrade your browser to the latest version. http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/internet-explorer/ We are going to learn many of the available features in Internet Explorer. Some of these features are also available in other browsers so if you are making the switch, these features will work very similar if not the exact same in all five browsers. * Practice: Lets start up Internet Explorer . There should be an icon on your desktop. Double Click on the icon. If there is no icon, go to the Start Menu and find it there.
  9. If you are new to Tabs, it will completely change the way you navigate and search the Internet. Instead of clicking on a link, waiting for the page to load and having to use the back button, that link can be loaded into its own tab window behind the scenes, with the current page still open. Here is an example: You are at a news site and there are five articles you want to read. Traditionally a person would have to click on one of the articles and wait for it to load in the browser. When finished with the article, the user would have to hit the back button and wait for the main page to load again and then click on the next article and go through the process again and again. With Tabs, you can go to the same news site and load all five stories into their own tabs within the same browser window, each page loading by itself behind the scenes, ready to read at any time. All while you search the main area of the news site for more articles. When you are ready, you click on a tab, read the article, when finished close the tab and move on to the next article. All of this done without having to hit the back button once and without losing the original page.
  10. There are many different ways to access a new tab: 1: File Menu > New Tab – This will open a new blank tab window. 2: Ctrl T is the shortcut to get a new blank tab. 3: There is also a New Tab button to right of the last tab. * Point out where that the New Tab Button is located. 4: To load a link in a new tab window, press the Ctrl key and click on the link. * Practice: Click on the New Tab b utton or Ctrl T . This will open a blank new tab. 1: Type in cbc.ca/canada/ in the address box. 2: Hold down the Ctrl button and click on 3 different news article links. This will load each link in a new tab window with the title of each page showing in the Tab. 3: Click on one of the Tabs to view it. 4: When finished, click the X on the Tab to close it. Links can also be loaded as tabs by Right Clicking on the link and choosing Open in new Tab . 5: Close out of all tabs.
  11. 1: Firefox® 2: Chrome 3: Safari Some Tab Shortcuts that work in all the main browsers: Ctrl T to open a new blank tab. Ctrl Click on link opens the link in a new tab in the background. Ctrl Shift + Click on link opens the link in a new tab in the foreground. Ctrl Tab Key will move you forward to the next tab. Ctrl Shirt and Tab Key will move you back to the previous tab. Ctrl and W is the shortcut to close a tab. Tabs can also be rearranged . Click on hold on a tab and drag and drop the tab in a different location.
  12. If the Favorites button is not turned on, go to the View Menu > Toolbars > Favorites Bar or Right click in the Bar Area and choose Favorites Bar. *Practice: We are going navigate to a couple of websites and save them as Favorites . There are a few ways this can be done. The website can be saved into the Favorites Area or it can be saved to the Favorites Bar . 1: Type your favorite website into the Address Bar at the top and press enter. 2: Click on the Favorites Button . This will open the Favorites Area panel. (Click on the Favorites Button again to Close the panel)
  13. The Favorites Panel gives convenient access to all Favorites, Feeds and History, with each available as a tab. 3: Add to Favorites Button: This button is at the top of the Favorites Panel. This will add the current website in the browser window or current tab to the Favorites Area. Click the Button. A window will pop up – Add a Favorite . 4: Name : The title of the current webpage will show up by default in the Name area. This can be overridden if too long or if you want to use a custom title for your own reference. You decide if you want to rename the Favorite or not. 5: Create in: This is a drop down area for the location of the Favorite. By default, the Favorite will be save in Favorites Folder. We are going to create a new Folder to store our Favorites for the workshop. Click on the New Folder Button . 6: Call the Folder – Workshop and click the Create button. 7: Click the Add Button. The Favorite has now been added to the Workshop Folder in the Favorites Area. Favorites can also be created and accessed from the Favorites Menu at the top of the browser. Lets create one more Favorite this way. 8: Type in the address to another website. 9: Click on the File Menu > Add a Favorite . 9: Rename the Favorite – optional 10: Create in: Choose Workshop and click the Add Button. To work with Favorites click on the Favorites Button . Click on the Workshop folder to expand it. You should see the two newly created links in the Folder. Click on either one to load them in your browser.
  14. Type in another website into the Address bar. 1: Click on the Star Button to add a Favorite to the Favorite Bar. This will automatically put the website in the Favorites Bar. You may want to alter the link to fit better in the allotted space. 2: Right Click on the Favorite to make any changes such as rename. There are also options to open, open in a new tab, open in a new window and delete. 3: Favorites can also be moved by dragging and dropping. Click and hold on the Favorite, drag and drop to move it to a different area of the Favorites Bar. Folders can also be created on the Favorites Bar with multiple Favorites residing inside a folder. As you start creating more and more Favorites, folders can be a great way to keep the Favorites Bar organized and clutter free. 4: To create a Favorites Bar Folder, right click on any Favorite Bar Favorite and choose New Folder . Type a name for the Folder and click Create . The New Folder will appear on the Favorites Bar and now any Favorite can be dragged and dropped onto the Folder to be moved into the folder. 5: Lets move a couple links into the new folder by dragging and dropping. Favorites in Other Browsers: Favorites in Firefox® , Chrome and Safari are called Bookmarks and function in a very similar fashion.
  15. Any Websites listed in Home Button Drop down list are home pages. This is a great place to store your most frequented sites and works similar to Favorites. The difference being, one click of the Home Button, loads each Home Page in it’s own tabbed window. If there are three Home Pages in the list, clicking the Home Button will load all three pages in their own tabbed windows at the same time. * Practice: Let’s practice changing our Home Page. 1: Type in the address of the website you want to be your new home page. 2: Once the page has loaded, click on the Home Button drop down arrow 3: Click on Add or Change Home Page from the list. 4: Choose “ Use this webpage as your only home page ” So now anytime the Home Button is clicked, this new Home Page will load in the current browser window. * Practice: Now, lets add a second home page. 1: Click on the New Tab Button or Ctrl T . 2: Type in the address of another website or choose from the list of recently closed tabs. This list is a quick way to get a webpage back that you may have accidently closed. 3: Once the page has loaded, click on the Home Button drop down arrow . 4: Click on Add or Change Home Page from the list. 5: Choose Add this webpage to your home page tabs. Now anytime the Home button is pushed, both home pages will load at the same time in their own tab window. Also when Internet Explorer is first started, both home pages will load. You can probably see how quick and handy this can be for those sites you visit everyday. To remove a home page, click on the Home Button drop down arrow and roll over Remove and choose the home page to remove.
  16. *Practice: 1: Click on the Suggested Site Button 2: Click Turn on Suggested Sites . 3: A Suggested Sites pop up will appear. Click Yes. It may take a little time for the Suggested Sites area to acquire enough information about your viewing trends to be able to suggest sites for you. To turn off Suggested Sites, click on the Tools Button on the far right. Click off Suggested Sites near the bottom.
  17. To turn on InPrivate Browsing, go to Tools > InPrivate Browsing. InPrivate will open a new window. InPrivate will only protect any browsing within this window. Tabs can still be opened and closed inside this and will be protected. Any tabs or windows outside of an InPrivate window will not be protected. Make sure you see the InPrivate Blue Indicator in the Address bar before proceeding. InPrivate Filtering is also available from the Tools Menu and can be customized. This helps to prevent websites from collecting information about other sites you visit. Private Browsing in other browsers works in a similar fashion: Firefox® has Private Browsing . Chrome has Incognito . Safari has Private Browsing .
  18. By Default, Pop-up Blocker is turned on. To manage the way Internet Explorer handles pop-ups, go to: Tools > Pop-up Blocker > Pop-up Blocker Settings or Tools Button > Pop-up Blocker > Pop-up Blocker Settings . In the Pop-up Blocker settings, exceptions can be made to allow pop-ups from certain sites. Type in the address of websites to be exempt. The Blocking level can also be adjusted from low to high. To turn off the Pop-up Blocker, go to: Tools > Pop-up Blocker > Turn off Pop-up Blocker
  19. There are many different ways and places to do searches online. For the workshop we will be focusing on searching with Google . Searches can also be narrowed down to websites, images, news, and many others. *If there is extra time at the end, pull up Bing and demonstrate.
  20. http://www.Google.ca Google Search ranks pages. Google has two main buttons when making a search. “Google Search” will create a search list and "I'm Feeling Lucky” will be take the user directly to the first search results webpage.
  21. Bing offers a much more visual search experience when compared with Google’s minimal look. Bing’s home page has a full size photo that changes regularly. There are arrows in the bottom right corner to view previous featured photos. http://www.Bing .com
  22. A basic Google Search is searching Google ’s index of the web. When search words are entered, Google searches for every webpage in the index with those words. Most times there are thousands if not millions of results and a set of over 200 proprietary parameters narrows the results down even further. The ordering or the results is based on Google 's trademarked “ PageRank ” formula (algorithm) that arranges the order of the search results on a ranking system. The toughest part of a Internet Search sometimes is getting started, deciding what words to include and how to word them. Query Suggestions can come to the rescue or at least speed up the process. As you start typing, a drop down list of possible searches starts to appear under the search box. This can be a very helpful aid in choosing words or phrases for a search especially if you’re not sure how detailed you want to make your search or how to exactly spell tough words and names. *Practice: 1: Start typing canola prices into the search box. As you type the suggestions start to appear. 2: Click on Canola prices and click on the Google Search button . The great thing about Query Selections is you always have the option to finish typing or click on one of the suggestions. The I’m Feeling Lucky button will take you directly to the website of the top hit in the list and in most is not going to be the site you want. Another way to narrow down search results is to have Google search the entire web or just Canadian content. In many cases, this can be a very powerful way to filter out irrelevant search results especially if the subject matter is specific to Canada.
  23. This search took 0.10 seconds and yielded 378,000 results. The Search Results reside in the Centre Column. Each Result has the page title, the web address and a text preview to help the user see if any of the returned results are relevant before clicking on them. Also, any words that match the search words are bolded . By default, Google does a web search. Once the search results come back, options at the top left of the page make it easy to change from a Web Search of Canola Prices to an Image Search, Video Search or News Search of Canola Prices. The same options are available in the left column as well. For this example, we will stay in the Web Search. There is also the option to narrow down to search to only Pages from Canada . *Practice: 1: Click on the Pages from Canada link . This should narrow down the search results dramatically. Below that, are options to control search results according to when the pages were last updated. 2: Click on the Latest link . This should arrange the Search Results with the most recently updated pages for Canola Prices at the top. The last updated time for each page will be displayed in grey text to the right of the URL (web address). 3: Now lets narrow the search down even further. Scroll to the bottom of the page. Below the Search box is Search within Results link . Click on the link and type Alberta in the search box and click on the Search within Results button. This should narrow our search results down even more. Some of the results might not seem to match what we are looking for so lets adjust the time the pages were updated again. 4: Click on the Past 24 Hours link. This will adjust the Search Results and now web pages with actual prices are beginning to show up in the results. As you can see, choosing the latest updated links doesn’t always have the desired results. Sites updated in the Past 24 hours is usually a good option. Let’s narrow the search down even more by adding more descriptive words might also be an option. Maybe we want prices for a specific area in Alberta. 5: Click on the Search within Results link again and type in Edmonton and click the button. We have now narrowed our Search Results down to just a few pages. Also, any related Sponsored (Paid) links show up in the right column.
  24. *Instructor* These numbers are approximate since the web is constantly changing. So here is the process of our search so far: Canola prices = 378,000 Search Results Canola prices + Alberta = 38,000 Search Results Canola Prices + Alberta + Updated in Last 24 Hours = 87 Search Results Canola Prices + Alberta + Updated in Last 24 Hours + Edmonton = 8 Search Results * Practice: Now lets actually take a look at some of the pages from our Search Result. Instead of clicking on the links, lets use Tabs. 1: Press Ctrl and click on the first link. 2: Keep Ctrl held down and click on the rest of the links one by one. This should open all the pages in our detailed search result in their own tab while still keeping our Google Search window open. Click on the tabs one by one to look at them and close (x) out the tabs when finished.
  25. So we are going to use an Advanced Search to find the dates for upcoming Oilers vs. Flames games this season. Now we could do a regular search and type in some keywords and search that way, but it may bring up some unwanted results and may take a few steps of adjustments to get results for the NHL Hockey edition of the Battle of Alberta. The Advanced Search can be quicker in many cases and much more powerful. The Blue section at the top of the Advanced Search Window shows how your search will be displayed in actual text that Google Search understands. The nice advantage of using the Advanced Search feature is the user just fills in the boxes without having to remember any code or specialized search punctuation. If you are interested in learning more about features, there are little tip pop-ups on the right side of some of the boxes with more information. *Practice: Ok lets fill in the Advanced Search Window and try to find some dates for the games. 1: All these words : Put any relevant keywords in this area. Type in NHL , tickets , schedule, Calgary, Flames, Edmonton and Oilers. 2: This exact wording or phrase : This is an area to put groups of words or phrases and have them actually searched together instead of as individual words. Type in Battle of Alberta . 3: One or more of these words : this allow for either one of several words or items to be searched. Type in 2010 in the first box and 2011 in the second. 4: Don’t show any of these words : This is an area to exclude pages in our search that have specific words. We don’t want our search to bring up anything about the CFL version of the Battle of Alberta so type in Eskimos and Stampeders . 5: Results per page : We will increase the number of search results that show up on each page. Choose 50 from the drop down menu. 6: Language : Searches can be narrowed down to a specific language. 7: File Type : The search can be narrowed down to a specific type of file such as a PDF, PowerPoint or Word document. 8: Search within a site or domain : This is where we can type in a specific website and only search within that site. A site like YouTube or Amazon would have tens of thousands of pages. Click the Advanced Search Button at the bottom and lets check our results. Use the Tab technique to check out any pages that you think might work.
  26. A few Search Tips and Tricks. Use the Plus (+) sign directly before a word to search precisely as spelled. Use the Minus (-) sign directly before a word to exclude pages with this word from the search. Use the Asterisk (*) as a wildcard search term. The asterisk will be treated as a placeholder for an unknown word. Put groups of words or phrases in “quotes” to have them searched exactly that way and in that order without any change. http://www.Google .com/support/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=136861 * Time permitting – Give the students a list of 5 different things to search. Make sure each one is something a little different, maybe a video search (movie trailer) and directions, etc.
  27. We could take any of our previous searches and click on the Images Link to bring up an Images Search with the same parameters. Even better, we could hold down Ctrl and open up the Image Search in a separate Tab.
  28. * Practice: Lets do a new Image Search. Open a new blank tab and go to: www.Google.ca 1: Click on the Images Link at the top left of the window. 2: Type in the some keywords for a local landmark in your town. Make sure to be somewhat specific (landmark name, town name, province). 3: This will load a thumbnail photo search result for that landmark. 4: In the left column are different ways to narrow down the search. Photos can be organized by size, color and type of image. 4: Ctrl Click on one of the thumbnails to open it in a new tab. 5: Click on the Full Sized image link on the right to see the photo by itself in a window. 6: To save the photo to the computer, right click on the photo and choose Save Picture as click on Desktop in the left column of the Save Picture pop-up window and Click on the Save Button. Just remember many of these photos may be subject to copyright. There is also an option to do an advanced image search.
  29. * Practice: 1: Click on the Google Logo to go back to Google.ca 2: Click on Maps in the top left. 3: Type in your address in the search box and click search maps button. 4: Choose between Map View, Satellite View (with or without labels) or Earth View (Plug in needed – 3D view) 5: Practice zooming in and zooming out, adjusting the orientation and clicking on the different view settings. 6: Click and hold on the little yellow man in the zoom bar. Drag and drop him on any of the blue highlighted streets to see a Street view . If you don’t see a blue highlight for the street chosen, there is no available Street View for that street or the street is a private road. 7: There is also a split view, giving you access to be able to see the map and Street View at the same time. You can either move around in Street View mode or drag the Yellow Man on the map to move the Street View. Clicking, holding and dragging in Street View will Rotate left, right, up or down. Double clicking a halo or the arrows in Street View will move you along the path. 8: Clicking in the top left corner of the map will launch Street View in Full Screen Mode. Press ESC on your keyboard to get out of Full Screen Mode.
  30. * Practice: 9: Get Directions: click Get Directions on the left and find directions from your address to somewhere else. Your address should automatically be in one of the boxes. Type in a city or address into the other box and click Get Directions Button. 10: Click Add Destination to add a third or fourth stop in to your directions. 11: Once the driving directions show up, any direction with a camera icon, has Street View access. 12: Spend a few minutes moving around and trying different options in Google Maps and Street View. * Have the Students do a News and/or Video Search on their own now. Give them a subject matter and a couple of minutes to use Google Search and the many options available to go and find it.
  31. * Practice: 1: Close out of all windows and tabs except for one. 2: Click on the Tools Menu > Delete Browsing History 3: Ctrl Shift and Delete is the Shortcut 4: Make sure all of the boxes are checked and click the Delete button. 5: This will clear all Browsing History information from your current session from Internet Explorer .
