eBay was founded in 1995 in San Jose, CA and has spread all over the world. It is one of the few success stories from the dot-com era of the late 1990s. Some refer to eBay as the “World’s Biggest Garage Sale” with millions of items for sale in both bidding and fixed price settings. eBay is a publicly traded company (NASDAQ: EBAY) on the NASDAQ stock exchange with over 15,000 employees and $8 Billion USD of revenue in 2009 1 . eBay started as an auction site with bidding of fixed durations. It has since expanded to include fixed price regular shopping, eBay Motors, eBay Travel and The Big Deal . eBay Motors is an area dedicated to buying and selling vehicles, vehicle parts and accessories. eBay Travel is a travel portal and The Big Deal is an area that offers deep discounts on products at fixed prices with free shipping in Canada. Items are featured for one week or as long as supplies last. eBAY INC. It is a good idea to do a search before placing any items on sale. Seeing how many other similar items are being sold and what the price range can give us a ballpark idea of the value of our item in the eBay environment. Plus it is nice to know how many of the same or similar items are available for sale on eBay; think of it as scouting out the competition. *Practice: 1: Type in keywords related to your product in the search box, choose a category from the drop down list and click on the Search Button. eBay will come back with a list of Search Results. The amount may be staggering sometimes. In the left column, the search can be refined by a list of categories related to your search. 2: Click on a related Category to narrow the Search Results down. 3: Scroll through the new search results and choose one.
This should give you a good idea of some of the things you will need to think about when setting up your first listing. 1: The product will need a descriptive title that can be easily found in a search. Be precise but not too descriptive. Be sure to include all the necessary keywords for that product so it can be found in most search scenarios. 2: Look at the price of the selection and make sure to go back to the search list and look at more listings and prices. You don’t want to price your item too high and not get any interest. You also obviously don’t want to set the price too low and risk not getting proper value (profit) for the item. 3: Category is also important. Where does my product belong? Placing the product in the right category will also help more people find the product easier. Look though the search list for a couple of minutes and get familiar with your competition.
*Take students to the Fees page.
When an item is listed on eBay, an Insertion Fee is charged. There are many different ways to insert a listing and the fees vary accordingly. For the scope of this workshop we cannot go over and cover all these fees but please spend a couple minutes and read through the options on the page and decide which one will work best for your product. * There is also an option to list a product as Business & Industrial equipment. Listing this way has a separate list of fees
If an item is sold or ends with a winning bid , there are more fees called – Final Value Fees . These fees vary depending on how the item was sold and what kind of item it is. Here is an example. If an item is listed in an auction-style format and it sells for $100.00 , the final value fee will be $9.00 or 9% . If the item doesn’t sell, no fees will be charged.
If you ever get stuck, eBay has a selling tutorial at: http://pages.ebay.ca/education/selling/tutorial_1.html *It is a good idea to go through the tutorial.
1: Type in your UPC, ISBN, or product name and click Start Selling . 2: The next page will help you find or choose a category for your item. 3: There are two tabs – Suggested Categories and Select a Suitable Category . The listing if needed can be modified by clicking on the Edit Listing link. Scrolling down farther displays a preview of the listing and a summary of all fees associated with the listing. If everything is satisfactory click on the Continue Button .
