After carrying out this survey I found that most of our target audience are girls, which means that we will need to make our film appeal to girls mostly. To do this I have came up with the idea of making the main character also female, since this will allow the audience to relate better to the character in the film, which will help the events in the film to cause a bigger impact on the audience.Another aspect we will explore is gender stereotypes. We will do this by having equal numbers of girls and boys amongst the group of friend who are attacked but the fact that the only survivor is a girl goes against the stereotype that women are weak and vulnerable because she fought in order to stay alive without anybody else’s help which makes her independent as well. This will please our target audience as it allows them to feel powerful and happy that we didn’t follow the conventions of horror films where the girl always dies or needs somebody's helps. But we will also explore the stereotype that men are aggressive by making the villain in the film male while at the same time including another character who shows a more caring side of men, who will be the one of the friends who is the most worried about his friends whereabouts. The fact that our film will have male charactersis also an attempt to appeal more to our female audience especially since it’s an all girl school.
Another thing I found from our results is that half of our target audience watch less than 5 films a month. This means that we will need to find a way of making our film one of those 5. To do this I came up with the idea of making our storyline explore how the audience is usually entertained by a film through the fact that they feel relieved that the events happening in the movie aren't actually happening to them, and making the main character experience the exact opposite of that, since SHE is the victim in side the film she is watching which eventually leads to her being the victim in real life as well.Another thing we will pay extra attention to is the quality of acting in our film, which will add credibility to the story. To do this we will be holding short auditions for the main role (since she holds the weight of the story) with anybody who is interested in playing that role, we will also cast students who have studied GCSE or A Level Drama for the supporting roles.
Our survey included a question which required the participant to write down their favourite horror film. The most common name that came up was Paranormal activity. A characteristic which the film holds with the other films that were mentioned was the use of the camera’s point of view (Blaire Witch Project), the idea of the antagonist being a ghost or demon who possess people especially children (The ring, insidious, the grudge, sinister, shutter) and the fact that the action builds up and almost nobody survives as the end. The film paranormal activity is really popular in recent years leading to 4 films in total, films about possession in general have been popular releases in recent years such as Sinister, the possession, The devil etc. This means that because we are going against this trend we will be able to make our film stand out amongst other horror film releases since we are offering our audience something new and fresh. However we will still need to incorporate some of these popular conventions into our film, so we have decided to:-Make half the film from the point of view of the camera.-Make every character die while at the same time leave space for a sequel.-Have a scene where a character is being dragged away but not by a ghost.
Leading on from the previous chart it is no surprise that our target audience have chosen Serial killers and ghost/demons as their favourite villains since these were the most common antagonists amongst the previously mentioned movies.By looking at these results I have decided that we should try to merge both types of villains into one. To do this I have come up with the idea that the villain of our film will be a serial killer who uses ghost and demons to kill his victims.
This chart shows thatmost of our target audience prefer to watch horror films in the company of their family or friends. So I came up with an idea of taking advantage of the emotional attachments my audience has with these people. I will do this by making the friends in the film die, by doing this our film will be able to generate some kind of emotional response from our target audience.Another thing we will explore is the idea that people usually watch scary films with others so that they feel safer, for reassurance. This is why in our film we will make the may girl die because of her family members unintentional actions, in the film her mother/sister will turn the movie on again and will cause the main girl to die in the film as well as in real life.
Mainstreamers because they follow current trends in the horror movie category which is why they will be interested in our film and how we make use of this trends as well as challenge them. They also value the family which is where we will be able to draw an emotional response from them.Explorers because they value difference, adventure and experience so they will be bale to appreciate the conventions and trends we have challenged or modified in our film.
