What is Social Media?
 Social Media represents a shift in how people
discover, read and share news, information and
content
 It's a fusion of sociology and technology
 It helps transform monologues (one to many)
into dialogues (many to many)
 Social Media represents a democratization of
information, transforming people from content
readers into publishers

What is Social Networking?
 Social Media sometimes involves the use of social
networking tools
 A social network service focuses on building
online communities of people who share interests
and/or activities, or who are interested in
exploring the interests and activities of others.
Examples include:
 MySpace
 Twitter
 Facebook
 LinkedIn and many others

What is the Social Media Club?
 A global organization now in its third year with
chapters around the U.S. and the world
 Over 60 active chapters in the U.S.
 15 active chapters around the globe including chapters
in Canada, Europe, Australia and the Middle East
 There are currently over 100 start-up chapters around
the world forming with approximately 10 new
communities a month expressing an interest in starting
a chapter
 To learn more about the global organization,

 Membership is open –One can be a member
and participate in club events with no
requirement to pay any annual dues
 The national organization was founded based
on the principal of open, free and inclusive
membership rather than closed and exclusive

 Our local organization was promoted through
social media and social networking tools including
our website and blog and social networking
platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn

What is Social Networking?  Social Media sometimes involves the use of social networking tools  A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. What is the Social Media Club?  A global organization now in its third year with chapters around the U.S. and the world  Over 60 active chapters in the U.S.  15 active chapters around the globe including chapters in Canada, Europe, Australia and the Middle East  There are currently over 100 start-up chapters around the world forming with approximately 10 new communities a month expressing an interest in starting a chapter  To learn more about the global organization, please visit – www.socialmediaclub.org

The Southwest Florida Chapter  Those of us involved from a leadership standpoint established our initial relationships through the use of social networking tools  Our local organization was promoted through social media and social networking tools including our website and blog and social networking platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn  Much of the collaboration and planning for this and future events occurred through the use of online or Web 2.0 tools such as Basecamp and Google Groups
